Personally, hats, but in more realistic scale (by which I mean the dwarf part, not the hat part). But, I'm strange like that Wink
I would agree that old skool are the marauders and citadel 3rd edition and new skool are the big hat models. I prefer the big hat models over converted models anyday with the exception of georcs awesome golden deamon winning CD conversion.
Hmmm...depends on the situation

I love ishkurs big hats, but i like seeing the new incarnation of chaos dwarfs up to date with 7th edition
I always think in three categories:

Helms, Hats, and Masks.

Helms being Maruader-type 3rd edition models, then Hats being 4th/5th edition models, then Masks being Hellcannon-esk models.  There are then various cross-overs between these.

I like a little bit of each, though I tend to go for a Hybrid of Hats and Masks.
hats. they give the army a unique look, and believe it or not but those big hats can be useful in battles
I love them all helms ,hats and masks and like the idea of all of them in one army although i only have 3rd ,4/5th ed miniaturesRespect to the Hat!
Hats! It's nonsense to say Chaos Dwarfs are in hiatus because of the hats. Respect to the Hat! Some of the miniatures were just awfully sculpted, and probably not many people felt that there should be anything Chaos without horns and helmets. Let's face it, the artwork was not overly impressive either and curly beards aren't exactly every fantasy gamer's taste.

The hats are part of the Babylonian / Persian theme. The persians didn't look ridiculous with hats, so why should dwarfs do? Give a Babylonian curly beards and steel helmets and you totally ruin the look.

Apart from the above theoretical rant, I am quite liberal at the style used. I think all of them can be justified and I actually do like the fact that our army is the one that can be sculpted in so many distinct fashions. Happy
3rd edition Chaos Dwarfs before the hats.
They look like what CD should look like - normal Dwarfs but slightly twisted.
I love the Hats. My painting and my converting isn't too good but with these minis, I still have people staring wide eyed at my army.
You mean what they do for Warhammer Historical? Nice thought, but then again it means that GW will not make a lot of (or any) money with these armies.
Unfortunately, GW (by their own admission) are in the business of selling miniatures, so I don't think we'll see this any time soon.
Well since this seems to be the way GW is looking at Chaos Dwarfs right now, Hellcannon ect., I think anything that looks masky/steampunky without looking to wierd like Empire Steampunk looks right now.  I mean sinister-cool steampunk.  Takes Hat off
Me too, obviously ^^ They could still wear hats anyway, albeit smaller ones.
Funny to see how these discussions always evolve into the same dead end. ^^ As Grask Dragh so correctly put it, there will always be those CD fans who will not like the new look, whatever it will be. While I won't say the new dwarfs will not include miniatures that look like the hellcannon crew, I won't say either that we are not going to see *any* bighats in the new army - if it is ever released, that is.

And yes, Willmark I do believe the artwork counter-balances the miniatures. The hellcannon was made in 2004, the new rulebook in 2006. Its a very simple calculation which one is the more current design.
It sure means we will have a hot summer next year, anyway Big Grin
I personnally think (and hope) no more tallhats, they are too cartoonesk and current fashion in minis is more focussed on realism (no more blood red armies).

That beeing said, just how sure are of this armybook in 2009????Angry
Just found this on Wikipedia.. talking about BIG hats! Shock

I am a fan of the new style, but that doesnt mean I totally despise the Hats. In fact I see the Hats as more of status symbol, something only worn by CD sorcerers to distinguish themselves from the more lowly servants. Although I have to say that the hats were a bit ridiculous. Easily doubling the height of the model wearing it. Realistically wearing something that huge would seem as much a battle to keep the thing on your head as it would be fighting the enemy (not that a proper chaos dwarf couldnt handle it of course). I do agree that if Hats return they should be toned down a bit.

I agree - I like both the new and old style. I think a whole army of bighats is a bit much - possibly only an elite unit or two, and characters. That is how I am modelling my army anyway - mix of masks and helms, and bighats for champions and characters.
