For those who don't know I support PCs and Macs at my job. I dabble with a couple distros of Linux as well. For a browser I use Firefox on every platform I run. And then there is Internet Explorer... I'd call it a piece of crap, but that would actually be an insult to things that truly are pieces of crap... IE7 are you kidding me? Just how slow has this thing become, the 2-14 security update brought its "performance" down from abysmal to downright laughable.
All started when I went to check a few things on my router IE refused to display anything when Safari and Firefox could clearly get to it. Deciding to waste no time I opted for the "nuke um from orbit" option and blew it away reverting back to IE6 for router connection duties...
<rant done>
IE has major crashing issues right now.. so bogus. I use Mozilla Firefox also, but MSN mail comes up in IE

honistly I prefer IE
only because thanks to my thousands of virises on my laptop i can't run firefox.
(that's what i get for picking up a random computer i found)
THANK GOD FOR MY NEW COMPUTER!!!
Haven't gotten anything new on it yet.
Nice to see that more and more people actually move away from the IE... only use MAC - at home and at work - and Mozilla as a main browser (Safari as secondary)... But the annoing part of it all is that every time a program a website at work, I have to test is on IE... And somehow IE is always fuc*in* up what works perfectly in other browsers

So... in other words, I couldn't agree more... IE is some bull(centaur)*#^! indeed.
Truer words have never rung out. To be honest for 95% of the computing public (home user that is) the Mac would be a great choice. Hard to imagine, but most people don't need a PC. The vast majority of people; surf the web, send email, hook up their IPod and transfer songs. Some might use their computers for photos and movies for which programs like iPhoto and and iMovie totally own.
Thats not even considering the strength of UNIX and services like launchd and EFI for boot services. Mac OSX 10.5 is now 100% UNIX certified. It makes Windows look like what it is...
Use what you want I say, but there is no better example of what is wrong with MS's code philosophy then IE.

Download a copy of Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com and install that. More then likely it will meet your needs quite nicely.
dont really like the mac OSX myself, just seems a bit too dumbed down, i mean i do have more than 1 finger.
have to agree with firefox being fantastic, opening new pages in new tabs, the pop up blocker, every download in 1 download box, and the ebay toolbar have all made it a million times better than IE. i dont think ive used anything else for about 5 years, and wont be changing soon.
Umm assuming you mean multi button mice? OSX has supported them from the begining. The mice that come with them are 5 button...
I can get if you feel the GUI is dumbed down, its not going to appeal to everyone. The OS is hardly dumbed down.
FF though? Hands down superior. Plugins for FF kick butt too.
Whats the diference? I've used Firefox in past but use IE7 now and cant see a diference. Both load instantaneously, both can open new tabs instead of new windows. I only use it for browsing so what plugins would you want?
Address bar, favourites, back, forwards, home and refresh are about the only butons I use...please enlighten me

my mate had something once so he could run his pc like a mac. it was just very weird, and completely pointless. I prefer the total control i have with a pc, the fact i can fiddle with anything i want.
And to be honest how awful is I tunes, trying to copy songs over for my fiancée has put me off anything apple make for life!
Itunes? dont even go there, one of the worst computer things ever invented !!!
Only people that like it are people with Ipods but they are biased.....
Seeing where this is going to lead let's just end it here. Worse thing ever? iTunes? I get there are people who don't like it but just a tad bit hyperbolic. There are PLENTY of worse things in the world of computing.
I should have know better then to start this. Suffice to say I've rolled back to IE 6 on my HP at home and it working fine.
You know what is worse? Real Player.
There is no need to lock this topic, just keep everything civil and logical if you want to discuss things in this thread.

stop twisting me words you !!!
"one of the worst computer things ever invented " Not THE worst
Back on Topic, IE7 works fine and lightning quick for me.....
Perv no twisting intended.
Xander and I were discussing this off site. If we keep it civil I'm game were all pretty much online friends here so let's keep it fun!
For me the biggest drawback is IE's terrible UI, and tabs that don't make much visual sense to me. Speed on any browser is rarely an issue. You want to see fast try the new version of netscape. Very clean and speedy these days.
Here's something we all can loathe: AOL!
Sony's Rootkit was another one.
lol yes it does. i wonder if its for people who have no need of their wisdom teeth!
AOL is pretty bad too.
i know a program we can all agree is highly useful though - army builder EX!
Some features of Firefox I use most often:
Quick searches in my address bar:
Allows me to create keywords to search using any search engine I want. For example, when I want to search google, I type, "g chaos dwarfs." Since I have mapped "g" as my google keyword, it can search google instantly. I use "w" for Wikipedia, "d" for dictionary.com, "i" for Google Images, "rt" for rotten tomatoes, "u" for urban dictionary, "y" for yourtube, "cdo" for Chaos Dwarfs Online, "cdom" for Chaos Dwarfs Online Members, "e" for ebay... the list goes on. Combined with "Ctrl+L" which puts the cursor to my address bar. I can search any search engine I want to in a split second without dealing with navigating though favourites, or even using my mouse at all. Also combined with "Ctrl+T" I can open a new tab (which puts the cursor in the addressbar by deafult) I can quickly open searches on a new tab. I simply can't use IE without this feature.
Spell checker:
A relatively new feature to Firefox, but an awesome one. Any input box will spell check as you type, underlining in red words it suspects as being misspelled. Super handy, even if the word list isn't great.
Right Click Options:
In Firefox, when I right click on an image, I get two very useful functions that save me time: View Image, and Copy Image Location. Viewing the image allows me to view only the image in my browser, and will allow me to then copy the URL of the image if I chose. Alternatively, I can just copy the image URL directly with Copy Image Location. The same is done with links with "Copy Link Location," a feature which IE now uses called "Copy Shortcut." Firefox is just so much more robust with it's quick access features.
Folder Support for Quick Link Toolbar:
Straight forward, I use favourites right on my GUI, as you can do in IE. But Firefox supports embedded folders, which when clicked, pop out all the favourites in that folder. Makes for quick access to favourites beyond the number you can fit horizontally in the window.
Plugins:
This may seem obvious, but it's good. I use an Ad Block program, as well as an Eyedropper plugin which allows me to grab the Hex code for the colour of anything in Firefox. A very useful tool for Web development.

The number of plugins are endless, and the expandability is awesome.
Even if some versions of IE take less memory, I gladly give that ram up to these time saving features. I feel like I have one hand tied behind my back in IE.
Why Firefox is the browser of choice for me:
1) I’ve been using Firefox 3 beta 4 for a bit now and the attention to keeping it tidy is awesome. They’ve resisted adding bloat.
2) URL support. Much like the iPhone FF simulates predictive text capabilities. Type a single letter in the url/address bar. When you do so it makes logical assumptions based on next letter, sites you have visited previously and those who are a most likely match. It searches not just the letters but words in the url as well and any point in the url string. Hard to discribe, but cool.
3) Plugins. Can’t say enough there are so many that you can make FF function exactly as you want it to all from within the browser itself. There is literally something for every user out there.
4) Add RSS directly from the URL/Address bar.
5) Same on every platform that I use.
6) UI and GUI makes more graphical sense, where as IE 7 seems to have been a hatchet job. YMMV. For me it is not laid out cleanly. And when it is they seem to have hid everything within menus.
7) Stability. FF is one of the best in terms of Stability and OS interaction I’ve seen. IE idles well, but in use it goes all over the map in terms of CPU utilization. FF by contrast tends to perform more to an average and avoid spiking. Another attribute I love is that FF tends to idle even better then IE.
8) Bit more subject, but innovation. The Mozilla foundation has come from nowhere to grab nearly 20% of the browser market in less then what, 5 years? They are pushing things forwards as opposed to MS who had been skating with IE 5 and 6 after vanquishing Netscape. MS was skating they knew it and got caught. Look at the betas of IE8.
9) Security. MS’s track record has improved, but FF has been much better over the long haul. That’s being polite too. I would not risk my Internet banking to IE. I feel entirely comfortable doing it in FF.
10) Smart Bookmarks.
As always YMMV
Maybe, maybe not. If be willing to bet using FF as your browser might lessen the wipe it even three months routine. Can't hurt. But if you like IE who am I to tell ya different?
