any hoby add is good, afterall, it helps us find stuff for hobbying, and with me now trying to scult a whole army a lank to a place where I can get cheap expoxy resin, regular resin and other good would be apreciated

perhaps you could invest the cash on.............. hmmmmmmm, well, finishing your army and updating the blog may be an idea (hint hintWink)

on a more serious note, I haven't got a clue, as I don't know what it could be used for
How about selling CDO themed Tee shirts/polo shirts at a slight mark-up?

Another idea could be to set up a 'store' area where hobby materials and tools can be sold, also at a slight mark up.  People are always asking where to get sculpting tools, mould making silicon, casting resin, green stuff, brown stuff, basing kits (seige shaker bits!!) etc.  Why not buy them from this very site! and that warm fuzzy feeling from the knowledge that we've just helped our favourite Chaos Dwarf themed Website get even better!  These options would need some dedication though, and a volunteer to run with it might be hard to find.

I don't mind advertising (as long as it doesn't take over the whole siteSick).  I think your ideas for what to do with any 'extra' income are sound.  Although, before any realistic ideas are banded about, a projection of anticipated figures would be needed.  No point asking for expensive GH prizes if the funds will just about cover a 'pin badge' and a 'tin cup' if you know what I mean!!Shock

You should also make a 'Pay Pal' donation account up, so that people who want to and have the money can contribute to the cost of the site.  It's not fair really that you should foot the bill for our enjoyment xander.  I know I would contribute, I think this site ROCKS!Cheers!
You know where I stand on this. Google ads maybe though I'm against even that if truth be told.

If anything let's look into paypal donations. If everyone chipped in $5 US it would be more then enough.
how about a system like the miniatures page uses. relevant small business could pay you are small yearly fee to have an ad. as long as they are relevant i dont see the problem, in fact its quite good to see an advert for a obscure miniatures company and then check them out.

the bloodbowl site NAF used to have a membership system where you paid a $5 yearly fee and got a membership pack out of it, including a set of custom blocking dice. maybe a (definitely optional) membership pack where you got something and the rest of the costs went to the site would be good.

in fact id be quite happy to donate the green of my marauder mage or make a new one and you could cast that and give it away as part of a deal.

still that is all cutting in to your free time, so adverts is probably the easiest way.
Kinda new here but I'd say go for it!

As long as they are hobby related ads, why not?

I could also donate a converted mini to sell on E-bay to get some money in for example.
Good question Xander. While driving traffic to affliates is good the real question is how can we benefit. I'm of the mindset that raising the exposure of Chaos Dwarfs in general is our primary goal (its in the mission statement after all) Wink

As discussed the website hosting fees are not excessive. So rather then revenue lets brain storm ideas on how to get us out to a wider audience.

The question is how we can broach an even wider audience. Helping bordertown burning should be the first step to that end.
How about a mutual link initiative? A volenteer (or volenteers) contacts the other major forums they know and offers to post a link to them on our site if they will reciprocate. That way new members here get exposed to other cool forums/companies, and we get exposure in return
Not sure about the advertising but it doesnt seem to harm other sites as long as it isnt dating/webcam rubbish ala coolminiornot. If you have a disable feature it would be pretty useless for those advertising .
I would be willing to pay £5 a year but it would reduce members if the payment was compulsory!
Revenue generating ideas are good but that would be a fulll time job so not really applicable

To sum up i think it would be better to have discreet advertising and maybe a fee for members who want to support the site financiallyRespect to the Hat!
We could get a whip symbol to show we were slavers of the site lol
i agree with canix i wouldnt support an involuntary membership scheme, and nobody is going to pay for removable ads.

basically if your looking to take advantage of a large number of hits there are only 2 things you can do with that. use the site to advertise something of your own, or let other people pay to advertise on the site.
I think quite a few would pay, but it'd reduce the advertising revenue
As was previously stated, I would say go for the paypal donation scheme. I know a lot of the core people are probably willing to donate atleast 5$ American to the site, and that would just be a minimum.
If that does nto work out, then you could probably fall back on advertisement through GF9 and etc. I know I would probably donate a good 10-20$ easily, as I love this site, and I frequent it quite often these days.
I think the point is (if I read Xander correctly) is what to do (if anything) with the massive traffic that a very young site is generating.
As I proposed in another thread perhaps a "web ring" of sorts for CD sites
in other languages? Just a thought.
I have no problem with ads. Warseer has that little, unobtrusive banner at the top, don't they? That doesn't bother me in the slightest and, if there were more obtrusive banners, I can just block them using firefox plugins anyway. Might as well generate some revenue and cut down that $135.
heres an idea, how about of the front page we have some kind of chaos dwarfs in action montage, with a cool soundtrack, artwork, pictures in action, even soundbites from the podcast, to really get everyone who visits hooked and/or very curious.
not really a game in action, maybe a few pics of guys armies in battle, mixed with artwork and stuff. if possible it would be cool to have animation but i doubt anyone who has the ability as the time to do it.

something a bit like this

http://www.scifi.com/tinman/oz/

but less freaky and spinny and more chaos dwarfy
but how does that he;p with the cost?

I say we go for adds, but make a specific area for them so they don't stick in the regular site. Like another area near the main page.
I really like the idea of small unobtrusive ads for miniture companies.
But instead of money they could say, provide prizes for Golden Hat and similar.

So In exchange for traffic to thier site, they do prizes for the competitions.
but we need to money so xander dosen't have to pay

excess could go to prizes

this is a fantastic idea - much better than money, but donating prizes every now and again for advertising space, more like a sponsorship than a business deal.

that might then generate more interest in the competitions if there were more prizes to give
