So....how do you guys feel about it? Excited? Worried? I for one am really excited because Dark Eldar are more than likely getting redone!
I have no idea what's happening here as I've only looked at WFB for the last few years. I thought they only just bought out 4th edition. Are they trying to catch us up or something?
No, 4th Ed. was fine. But it's been, like, five years since it came out. That's about the average time between editions these days.
I have read through the 5th edition book and not muched changed. The things that did change, changed for the better. The rules are smoother now and some clarifications have been made to ease game play. All in all, it is the same.
I hear the leaked copy going around isn't exactly final, actually...
I know I'm behind the times but when it was first released people were singing 4th ed's praises, especially compared to the frosty reception 7th ed WFB got. What went wrong? I'm guessing power gamers broke the tournaments like "Rhino rush" and the like did with 3rd ed
Yeah, I can remember not thinking much of the pursuit rules when it came out
The background preview keeps reminding us that the end of the Empire is near. They keep talking about the time of ending and the end of mankind. Do you think it will have some influence in the game per se? Or is it just a way to make the background as dark as possible?
There is mention of the light of the astronomicon flickering and going out breifly destroying 1000's of ships stuck in the warp. Also it mentions tech adepts have discovered faults on the golden throne that are beyond their repair. Does look gloomy!
Well you never know...

AGPO CONSPIRACY THEORY OVERDRIVE!!!!
Look at it this way - most of the 40k range is now plastic. There's not a lot of updating they can do for space marines, orcs etc in terms of range, and their policy of support means they can't just keep releasing new chapters so...

They've got to re-fluff it! A total change in the background bringing some of those lose threads to the fore, a new great crusade maybe, any excuse to totally reorganise human military structures. Ergo we may well see them doing something radical like bringing the Emperor or a primarch back. They can't kill off mankind and they can't really make them any more threatened wihout doing so. Their only option fluff wise is either to stop there (no more big campaigns/sales) or to have a fightback.

Far fetched I know, but hey, why not?

Doesn't mean anything is going to change thou in terms of fluff...

I suspect very little will change at the moment, but it does fuel the furnace for the future.

Julys WD has prophesy in it that mankind will fall and nearly be destroyed but will then  rise to even greater glory than before. (the prophet was executed) It does suggest that a long way in the future they could change the whole way the galaxy feels.

They could kill off all the existing characters, some of the less popular SM chapters and alien races only to introduce completely new ones. There is mention of a species living among the ghoul stars that is hyper-violent (whatever that means) they could be introduced. Like AGPO said their could be a new emporer, or the old one gets resurrected and maybe put in an uber-dreadnought body and the great crusade begins anew.

GW COULD do all this and more. But i doubt they will to be honest

I doubt they'll do anything overblown, but they've got to do something with the fluff. yes we get it, they're all doomed. Big deal
I dont see how they could revamped the fluff, unless they start focusing on other races such as the Tau as much as the humans.
The only immediate beneficiries of the fall of the empire are the tau and chaos.  eldar are too few to even claim back un-inhabited exodite worlds, orks can move in but the tau seem to do a good job of keeping them in check, and for tyranids it's just a case of a different dessert on the dinner menu.  I like the idea of the emperor reborn, forging a new clutch of primarchs, that could start a huge civil war!!! cool.

EDIT: or the emperor freed at last from his mortal bonds becomes a chaos god!!

if tau had access to the warp they would destroy everthing they are the best army ever! Happy
tau forever! Happy

The only problem the tau offer the tyranids is annoying gristle between the teeth.  Even a lowly termagant can beat a shas 'o' in combat!

maybe the emporer will die. *gasp* and then the humans will start killing each other. this gives an excuse for all the space marine vs space marine battles and even lets imperial guard have a good scrap......

ooh, I like that! and factions are formed containing certain marine legions and IG battalions, whoa! they could even start developing their own technology, others might embrace the greater good and join the Tau to offer a pleasing side platter for the tyranids!!!

The reprint of the old pic of the Emperor on the throne (now is colour!) is different - he no longer has a face! The non bionic half is just a skull rather than flesh like it used to be.

Edit: This pic
Oh dear god, if the Imperium broke up it would certainly give an excuse for Space Marine vs. Space Marine combat, but that's the last thing the game needs.

I think it would be cool if the Imperium's system collapsed. Humanity started reacting to the Tau and had a revolution, with new techs and new science, so humanity no longer felt like a dead-end in social progression. Trimming the human realms and making the new humans pioneers again would be awesome. I think earlier editions were more 'we're exploring and surviving in a dangerous galaxy' wheras now humanity controls most of it.
Well, does anybody know what the changes from 4th (or even 3rd as i recall 4th being a slight update like 7th) be?

Also, the fluff for 40K is: if it moves, it will be fought. If it doesn't move, it shall be destroyed.

That is, except for the Tau, who seem to have some decent background, but not really stories as such...

Besides, at the end of it all everybody is dying except the 'nids... SM are losing gene seed, CSM don't have any, IG die in swarms and procduction rates of humans appears to be down, Eldar are dying out, DE are the same, Necrons are self-repairing, yet apparently falling apart (as a whole), Orks just are, they seem to be going neither way, the Tau are trying to expand, but everybody attacks them for the sake of it and the 'nids, if they felt like it, could devour the entire galaxy in a matter of seconds, but won't for NO reason WHATsoever... (entirely against their other background of: eat things to sustain itself...)
