Anyone else think the fluff behind these guys is good?

I never really followed 40k fluff before, but those models are just awesome.

Makes me think my first 40k sculpt will be a Solitaire...  Not quite sure even where to start there...?
Ahhh Eldar - the thing that got me into this hobby 14 years ago!

Harlies rock - their background rocks, their models rock, heck even their rules rock.

If you need any help with background let me know - its like second nature to me Happy

The Solitaire was always my fave character - the damned. Pretty much the opitomy of a tragic hero - these chaps are even shunned by other harlies, i wont even mention what 'regular' Eldar think of them!

Do bear in mind - the solitaire can be male OR female - contrary to some of the more recent stories.

As I said, if your after any help let me know!
I am pondering how best to portray this character.  I will probably get round to making it over the summer.

In the fluff the Solitaire takes the role of Slaanesh right?  So I'm presuming that the model should reflect that somehow...

If it wasn't so tall the Necron deceiver would be what I would base it on.  Failing that however, the wood elves seem a good start?

Or a witch elf?  All the other Eldar are in heavier armour/ robes or in undynamic poses.

If I can't find a suitable base model, I will have to sculpt the whole thing, which wouldn't be ideal, but I would do it.

The background material would help a lot in producing an up-to-date image, but to do a character like this credit it needs to be an awesome design.  Which will take many, many sketches.

Its so out of my normal way of thinking, and completely out of areas I have some knowledge of (dwarfs), that it would be a real challenge.
Expand those horizons!  That's how we grow. Tongue
Ok to fill you in...

Think of Harlies as a group of traveling actors- they go to the Craftworlds and perform for the other Eldar depictions of parts of the Eldar history.

There are a few key parts - great harlequin plays the laughing God, Death Jester plays Khaine, etc...

The solitaire plays Slaanesh - but its not as simple as that. All Harlies souls go to the laughing god when they die rather than being trapped in a spirit stone as per other eldar. This is because the laughing god tricked slaanesh and fled into the webway.

However to become the solitaire - the eldar forsakes this destiny and from the point of becoming the part he/she forfeits their soul to Slaanesh. they are forever damned.

Other Eldar - even harlequins shun the solitaire and wont speak/be near to him/her.this used to be represented in the old rules that the solitaire always fought on their own and could never join squads - even other harlies.

The solitaire is THE most tragic character in all of 40K in my opinion- I hope you do the character justice, I have confidence though as I have seen your skills!Happy
There's a story on 40Konline (admittedly fan written) that I read a while ago which is about a soltaire which I felt really explaines it well; I'll try and find it.

Found it

That is a very good story, I think it explains it quite well.

So to summarise what he/ she needs;
A 'mirror mask'?  It that just fan fiction?
Any standard weapons?  I am pretty clueless when it comes to eldar weapons, so I need some pointers.

Beyond that is it all up to me?

I am tempted to go for this model;

Mind

I have seen a good conversion using this as a base

Still searching for the converted solitarie pics...

Takes Hat off
I like the Wardancer for a base. Happy

He would certainly have some sort of Harlie mask and probably armed with a Harlequin's Kiss

Here's a link to the old models if it helps

the mirrormask is an old peice of wargeer,

the fluff was it made the face of the solitaire into the opponents worst fears/nightmares
Right.  So the mask stays.

@Mind
Whilst that would be a good model, I want to try and get them in trousers and in a dynamic pose.

@LZ
I saw those models, but they are so ancient that they're not much use for inspiration Sad

I've found a link to something useful

Notice the armament options of the solitaire.

2 things to consider;

First, what about a cloak loosely based on this, but without the high collar;

And for those who haven't seen the film Spawn, he has a living cloak that is impressive as it swirls round him.

Second, would it be a stupid idea to focus on making a duel between a solitaire and a great harlequin?  Could be tricky as they can't actually touch..... (scratches head).  If they both had dynamic cloaks that could be visually very impressive?

Or should I focus on just one model?

You might see where I am going with this, I plan to enter Golden Daemon UK this year, and my 40k single mini is already being worked on.  So this would either be a fun side project as a single mini, or an entry in the duel.

This was not true in the beginning. Then, the Solitaire was an individual touched by Cegorach (The Laughing God) himself, and possessed his insight into the nature of the universe.

Often other Harlequins would actually encounter a Solitaire, only to realize after he vanished that he was Cegorach himself.

Solitaire's also hid in plain sight. Living in Commoraugh, on a Craftworld or on an Exodite world as one of the people, only revealing his true nature when a Masque would arrive to perform.

They also were the only ones who new the location of the Black Library, as opposed to all Harlequins as in current fluff.

The new direction that Solitaires took (including the "Soulless" rule) are part of Gav Thorpe's re-imagining of them (the Harlequins) as unwitting tools of the Deciever.

The Death Jesters actually play the role of death personified. Khaine is played by the Master Mime.

It's actually called the Rictus Mask, and is worn by Great Harlequins, Shadowseers and Solitaires. It "is fitted with a small holo projector which is programmed to replay the death-throes of every opponent the Harlequin has ever killed, over and over again in a continous cycle.

Thought I'd clarify said points. My first army was Harlequins over 10 years back, and I've already ordered the entire new line. A perfect contrast to the earthy, gritty feel of my Dawi Zharr.Big Grin

Here's some of my old models, in fact..

Damn that's going to be hard to do... Hobgoblin

Lots of sketches needed.

@Danek
That last one is a DE assassin isn't it?

DANEK

Indeed. I found that Druchii Assassins fit the old Mime illustrations perfectly. Just a few arm swaps were needed. Happy
