who needs metal models now, and I'm going to have to stock up on paint, stupid games workshop... some how i might have to live without you...Mad
O 'ell no... I can't whait to see how much the chaos knights are going to cost...
well i  don't use there paints!! i have a lot of there figures and there e-bay . So gw
who need you!!!!! * as Kera  put her middle finger up   in a womanly fashion!!!!!
wow. just wow. I understand costs of everything are going up, HOWEVER, to comment on gas and fuel prices, then increase METALS and PAINTS seems a little incongruent. Plastics should be affected by rising fuel costs, should they not, as that is primary in their production?

I either case, following that lovely post we had a while ago about what you would change at GW, we must all realise now that they are suffering. They feel raising prices will increase profits. But they fail to see that as this is not a necessity, and disposable income for everyone around the world is decreasing, people will begin adjusting their budgets by avoiding WH purchases.

It's interesting that they announced it about, what, 1 month ahead of time... and since FYE is in June, they aren't trying to bolster sales right before.

oh, and THIS is hilarious! from their 2008 Annual Report

"Cost reduction programme continued

...This cost reduction programme has created a leaner and more responsive organisation, better equipped to face the
growth opportunities which lie before it.
The costs associated with this programme are shown as exceptional costs, which amounted to £3.6 million in the year.
We still expect the cost reduction programme to result in annualised cost reductions of £7 million, of which £5 million
have been achieved during the 2007/8 year."

sooooo, reduce costs, raise prices... business still faltering. hmmmm...

oh well, best advice, "support" the price increase if you want by going out now and buying the stuff before the price increase, or find an alternative supplier. No matter what, you're encouraging the price increase. and it sucks.
well next will be the white dwarf mag..
then they will keep in plastic wrap so you can't read it

The raw materials and the finished products both have to be transported somehow.

Quoted for Truth.

Honestly, all more price raises mean to any old time gamer is that there's less incentive to buy direct from GW anymore.

When i worked for GW, their business model seemed inherently flawed but useful to someone like myself.   They're targeting kids.  Kids with disposable income, under driving age, who may or may not stick with the hobby for more than 6 months.  Terrible for long-term planning, especially since they all but neglect the older gamers.

The upside to this is that these kids and their parents won't want the models sitting around once the kid has decided girls or cars are more important than toy soldiers.  And it creates a HUGE aftermarket where savvy gamers can pick up badly painted metals/assembled plastics or even new kits for next to nothing. Ebay has been my best friend when it comes to tracking down models i want.  Also Bartertown and even just putting up ads in local newspapers/craigslist/gaming stores.  And with the job market/gas prices/cost of having fun the way they are, it's only driving me more to these resources when a price increase is announced.

</soapbox>

I noticed all electricity in the UK (or, the ones provided by the major electricity providing companies) is up for around 25%, so I'm guessing somewhere around that.

I don't care about the raise, I'm getting my figures 2nd hand anyway Happy And I have enough to paint for at least the coming decade, if not two already (consider I'm playing/collecting for a very broad year now Happy ).
I for one am tired of you naysayers slandering the almighty GW.

It's not like they've produced numerous games over the years that I've payed my hard-earned money for, only to have them stop supporting them so I stuffed them under my bed.

It's not like I ever had to restructure an army and buy all new miniatures because the latest Codex/Rulebook invalidated everything I'd worked for. And they've never EVER erased one of my armies entirely.

In my 20+ years of gaming, GW has always put the interests of it's customers above and beyond any thought of commercial gain.
/end sarcasm

X-Porter, your first line scared me and then I was a little confused until I saw the sarcasm part. I decided (against the thought of it being sarcastic) it was sincere for some reason, lol.

Ha! Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you. I'm sane... really

I AM!!

Plus metals and paints are more heavy then plastics. This weight adds to the shipping cost.

Alright, I'm backing this up. a) transportation costs increasing? of course. always have, always will. Does not however, validate a '25%' increase. On a plastic range, yes, it's more consistent based on what I said prior. Increase in transport costs would probably be included in the regular increases that have been experienced since the dawn of time.

b) they *shouldn't* be shipping by Fed Ex, UPS, etc, so it's not necessarily a "per weight" load, but more of a "full load" or LTL "less than truckload" (think pallets of product, not in an 18-wheeler, but a truck nonetheless). Also, I might add, they'd be effing INSANE to not have shipping done inhouse. if they haven't vertically integrated with their shipping, they SHOULD. geeeezuz. Because the cost to ship with a full truck, 18-wheel, out of house, would not be worthwhile. If they are, then bingo, we found the reason for the price increase.

meh, I still don't really care as *I* don't buy from GW...

what a load of bullsh*t if we were their valued customers they wouldn't put up prices every 3 seconds
this is why captialism doesn't work

[attachment=774]

i pity the fool who buys from games workshop

They'd still have to buy petrol though, wouldn't they?

Seriously, that's all it is. Transport costs. No, it doesn't justify a 25% price increase but, as excuses go, it does make sense. Everything's going to go up in price as long as we're dependent on an ever-depleting resource.

Yes they would still have to, but it would limit the transportation cost increases. if all they have to pay for is the increasing gas prices, fine, however an outside shipping company capitalizes on the amount that they can raise prices due to gas, including extra margins for themselves. Also because, apparently aside from GW, most companies don't like going back to their customer every other month saying they need to increase prices. Most will pad the price increase enough to cover themselves for 1/2 a year to 1 year.

tobacco companies Tongue

Holy sh*t... We should almost be happy that they didn't raise it more...

My point exactly. GW doesn't seem to get that (gasp) they are not a necessity. My contention all along is that those actually buying from GW will face a decision at some point: gas and food or $50 plastic toy soldiers for little Johnny...

these are some of the price rises, there is no 25% raise thats a very bad rumour doing the rounds

All Blister up by £1
Codex/Army books up by £3
Glues up by £1
Sprays up by £2
Paints up by £0.25
Small Case up by £5
Large Cases up by £10
White Dwarf up by £0.50

the p3 privateer press paints are better and cheaper than gw
times-a-changing'

Regardless, since I never buy metal models other than in exceptionally rare cases and books are a one time cost I am not too bothered. Besides, there are other paint companies which are good, if not better choices.

How many times do we have to say this before we realise we are their slaves? Tongue

i agree, i think it was the 3rd edition ones, 40k - with the catalogues at the back - were so jam packed with more info and background than you can shake a stick at, the new ones seem a lot more bland and less fun, just look at how the 40k ork ones used to be

prices are just getting mad
ok that one is but the others arnt Happy

That is a 25% increase Wink

Undeadninjas: that's what a lot of people have being doing here. Although, not necessarily simplistic... (Ishkur is a primary example.)

I'm aware of the rising costs and I'm aware of how luxury and monopolistic businesses work, but it doesn't prevent the fact that I feel the prices are rising more than they should. Admittedly, I shall still buy the odd thing from Games Workshop every once in a while, but it does mean I'm going to buy less and more likely, buy it from other sources. This isn;t me saying "prices are going up, whinge whinge, won't buy anything, I have no love for GW anymore", I'm simply saying I'm disheartened by what they're doing as it makes it difficult for me to play a decent game, which they created. I feel that, although justified, it's a little higher than necessary (as well as too frequent) and is likely to provide problems for them in the longer term...
