Does anyone know of any way to get a character with a pistol, or throwing weapon, or any other short range 'ranged' weapon?

The reason for this would be to toss him in a unit of blunderbusses so when they stand and shoot the unit would not stop to be shot at until the pistol would also be in range.
(this is an empire tactic with handgunners/outriders)

Nope. Chaos Dwarf characters are limited to close combat weapons only, as far as I know.

Thats what I was afraid of, but I thought maybe there was some obscure ally, or hobgoblin or something that might get a throwing axe.

You might try taking some Dogs of War units or something, but I'm not sure you can take characters, let alone have them lead your own units.

i wouldnt worry about it most chargers start at 8" away and cavalry dont need so many to be killed.
