A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork & Concept Sketches - wallacer - 07-05-2007 12:27 AM

Most of the other races have nice artwork for them on the main GW site.  We obviously don't.
May I suggest that we start gathering CD artwork here?
Obviously we're not encouraging breaching copyright or anything like that, it would just be handy to have it all gathered together in one place.
The reason I suggest it is that I type up my own army lists (don't like army builder) and usually stick some pictures in there to fill in the gaps.

RE: Artwork - Xander - 07-05-2007 12:34 AM

There is a page online with all the CD art.  I am sure someone has the link. *smacks head for not bookmarking it*

RE: Artwork - The Flying Beaver - 07-05-2007 06:14 AM

GW art removed- Willmark

No artwork, you say?

RE: Artwork - Ghrask Dragh - 07-05-2007 06:53 AM

Those a great pics!
I'm trying the pose from the Sorcerer on Lammasu pic for my conversion. Most of these pics are done by an artist called Mark Gibbons, you can see his cool little MG signiture on all is drawings, he has an amazing site with all his artwork on I always look at for inspiration!

RE: Artwork - wallacer - 07-05-2007 08:05 PM

That's what I was looking for.  Many of those will make their way into my army lists.

thanks Takes Hat off

RE: Artwork - cornixt - 07-05-2007 09:20 PM

I have some much higher quality versions of those bw Mark Gibbons sketches

RE: Artwork - AGPO - 07-06-2007 07:34 AM

I'd never seen half of this before, its just incredible. I especially like the CD with the clawed foot fighting the wood elves

RE: Artwork - Ishkur Cinderhat - 07-06-2007 06:20 PM

Brilliant! So much great stuff! Happy

RE: Artwork - Kobarf - 07-06-2007 09:07 PM

I espescially like the hellcanon crew design sketches.
Getting inspired here Evil idea
Thanks for sharing oh great Flying Beaver Cheers!

Kobarf

RE: Artwork - Traitor King - 07-07-2007 09:45 AM

Yep, cheers for sharing FB!
I also like the hellconnon ones, inparticularly the firing one.
I just seem to prefer modern GW art.

RE: Artwork - Traitor King - 07-08-2007 01:19 PM

Evil idea

Ive got an idea!
Why dont we make this into a skicky somewhere, a kind of collection of all the CD artwork?
It would also be a good place for people to post their own CD drawings!

Much like the old "Compliation of Concept Art" that was on HoH many ages ago. Yep, it's a great idea. Grimstonefire has mountains and mountains of great artwork that I'm sure he'd love to share.

Please share them cornixt!

Yes, that's what I was hoping for when I made the original post.  Somewhere convenient I could go to find all the piccies gathered together in one place.

RE: Artwork - Ellimist - 07-08-2007 11:53 PM

I'll sticky it in a minute, just as soon as I decide where it should go. Off-topic isn't really the right place for it.

RE: Artwork - Nazhur - 07-09-2007 04:09 AM

This is great, wonderful to have a thread of art. Its hard otherwise to find good pictures out there.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Hobgobbler - 07-11-2007 07:17 PM

the one with the whip?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - cornixt - 07-11-2007 08:00 PM

Nice to see my old Big Hat kitchener pic is still getting some use.  I'll see what i can do about the higher quality Gibbons sketches.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - The Flying Beaver - 08-10-2007 12:06 AM

Huzzah, thanks to Cornixt I've been able to find artwork from the Chaos Dwarf Mon O' War fleet. Here's artwork of a Great Leveller:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Grongi Blackbeard - 10-13-2007 12:28 PM

has anyone else noticed the CD on the picture on page 83 in the 7th edition rulebook? i dont have a scanner, so i cant upload it, but you can just turn to that page.

maybe thats the 7th edition CD?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Pyro Stick - 10-13-2007 12:30 PM

Are you on about the sorceror with the skull hat?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Grongi Blackbeard - 10-13-2007 01:04 PM

sorcerer? no. i'm talking about the CD hero standing next to a massive chaos warrior on page 83 in the BfSP rulebook. dunno if it is there in the other book... its the article about generals and battle standards

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - metro_gnome - 10-13-2007 01:54 PM

yes hes pretty cool...
tho nearly all will try to convince you he is not a CD...

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - McNs - 10-13-2007 04:02 PM

I initially thought he was a non-chaos dwarf thane, but on closer inspection, his armor certainly hints at him being a CD.  If so, it'd be an interesting change in art direction.

- McNs

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - cornixt - 10-13-2007 08:00 PM

The jury is out on that guy.  He has lots of normal Dwarf imagery, plus some that looks non-standard, but he doesn't look very hostile towards the Chaos Warrior.

Is it the same Kubasa that have posted all those wonderfully converted dwarfs on CMON? I really love his army (especially the G.R.O.M. squad Big Grin).
Also I got the impression that Kubasa was working on a project called "Dwarf Tales" (if I remember correctly). Are those pics from that project? Or is it something new? Nonetheless new CD miniatures are always welcome Happy

I like the Overlord and Despot art. They look really bad-ass.

Yes it is.I think he did a Dwarf Boar rider that was cool as well.

No, these are not related to Dwarf Tales.I'm part of a project group aimed at a complete revision of the Chaos Dwarfs (see army list link in my sig). They were done specifically for that.

I notice he went back and edited the posts where he originally put some of these on, deleting the links. So I present them here whilst I can Wink.

If you take a look in the link in that thread in my sig, there is a lot more art. Some is awesome, most is unfinished.

Great! I'm looking forward to seeing that. Will Kubasa make some chaos dwarf minis? Happy

About your sig - um.. well, I kinda don't have time to go through all of that. The stuff you wrote, and linked there is massive! I'm looking there now and then, but with my work, phd studies and other activities it's hard to find time. Still, when the project will be finished I will gladly read it (preferably a printed version Wink I really should spend less time in front of the monitor).

Wow Baggronor, that is so cool!

The two Chaos Dwarfs doing a rite of some sorts while Father Hashut himself looks approvingly. (atleast, that's my interpretation! Wink )

Do you have more like these?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Baggronor - 04-23-2008 11:59 AM

This is the only Chaos Dwarf one I have done. I'd been meaning to do some artwork for them for ages, never really got round to it until yesterday.
Will add more as and when I do them. Happy

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Deebo - 05-05-2008 09:48 PM

I was just wondering how legal it is to get pics out of GW books and put them on a website?
I put a post in another section about a warhammer club that I am starting and asked if people would like to send some drawings that they would let me use on the site but I have had 0 replies so if its legal to whack the old GW books on the scanner and just start putting them on my page then I will do that, just seems to me that GW would not like that though... I dont know can anyone inlighten me please?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Obsidian - 05-06-2008 06:44 AM

Dunno for sure but you see GW artwork on the net all the time! I guess if you just state it's GW's intellectual property and it's used purely to illustrate the hobby you'd be fine...

I have question myself too. On the mainpage of this website you see the banner for Chaos Dwarfs Online. I believe it's a Hellcannon crew member pic from the Warhammer card game. Are there more pics like these out there? And of course, where?

Well I don't have contact with him anymore but seeing as I commisioned him to do it, and I own the original, go right ahead in using it with whatever you want mate! Cheers!:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Deebo - 05-06-2008 11:23 AM

Obsidian,
May I also use it for my website please?
I also think its a great pic.
Also anyone else that has some drawing that they would not mind me using please email me, PM me whatever, It does not have to be Chaos dwarf, I will use anything warhammer fantasy that I can have permission to use.
Thanks. Cheers!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Obsidian - 05-06-2008 12:50 PM

Willmark wants to use it for the webzine so if he agrees I'm fine with it. Cheers!:

Actually his name is Adrian and he used to be one of the most important GW illustrators in the past, but sadly he is no longer working for them. I'm sure you will recognize more of his artwork if you look at his page (www.adriansmith.co.uk). There are no other chaos dwarf pictures on that site, but it contains some of the most remarkable illustrations from warhammer universes in best quality, so I believe It's worth browsing.
Btw, the posted hobgoblins are put in the concepts section so we can't be sure if they are for warhammer.

Sorry for my english if there are any mistakes, as a rule I don't write on english forums but in this case I just couldn't resist to reply Wink

Amazing work! They remind me of the earlier GW artwork seen in Warhammer Armies.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - arzack - 08-11-2008 11:30 AM

thanks for slaves and nice comments and since blood bowl is more about the funny parts of everyday warhammer-universe-life i realy like the oldtime comic-flavour these early designs had...will look all diferent when completed with colors and light

I'd like to add mine! Takes Hat off

This is a sketch for my upcoming hobgoblin hero sculpt! He'll be on foot with heavy armor, great weapon and the gauntlets. After killing a vampire on hellsteed and a dwarf engineer he deserves a real mini:

I'm old skool, so just a pencil, pics with my camera and a little photoshopping! Just light and color fixing, never re-touched my drawings. Wink

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - HashutsChosen - 09-16-2008 07:04 AM

The first sketch is my concept art for the "eastern" style CD I use in my current army, and the second sketch was for my Haavrakh conversion.  The figure on the back is a sorc in obsidian armor from the armylist I wrote.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - HashutsChosen - 09-17-2008 07:10 AM

A couple more sketches, a sorc in obsidian armor I was looking in to converting, A concept close-up of Zhatan the Black, a sketch from the Zhorvan and Helna stories, and a concept sketch for the Avatar of Hashut.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - two_heads_talking - 09-17-2008 08:17 AM

Yay grupax, this is some serious work. If there ever is a new chaos dwarf army book, something like this would suit the cover well. May I ask you how you did this? Looks like some photoshop work or a really good scan.

Saved this for inspirational use - if you don't mind

used to draw a lot (like 10 years ago) ..., learned alot from crappy books (like"how to sketch animals"..., draw eyes..., though not always usefull, it gives insights.) lessons can teach you a lot, but self study can get you there faster if you're interested enough.

anyways, back on topic, here's a wip of the next one:

quote: but self study can get you there faster if you're interested enough, thanks for answering and do you use skeletons before you paint the sketch or do you just draw.
cant wait to see the taurus.
you should sell your paintings, they are much better than most gw ones.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - grupax - 03-31-2009 04:51 PM

jolpis Wrote:
... you use skeletons before you paint the sketch or do you just draw...

i think more in quick volumous shapes, skeletons kind of keep me away from the 3dimentionality.
anyways all drawn lines are in the scetch (nothing is erased) - so no skeletons in my closet =p
(still think GW is better though, but i'll get there eventually, once i get more active in drawing)

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - jolpis - 03-31-2009 05:00 PM

thanks i've got to start scetching, and to be honest you are a lot better than gw, look at the army book covers, they just work with their panitings 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. (seen the new chaos cover?, hes got the head of a fly.)

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Baggronor - 03-31-2009 06:53 PM

I'll bung my stuff in here too for reference, as this seems to be the big artwork thread Cheers!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Malorn - 06-19-2009 09:33 AM

Here is my go at some CD artwork. It is supposed to be a taurus riding lord, reporting back to a bullcentaurguarded sorceror in the tower of Zharr-Naggrund.

While not as good as either Grupax or Baggronor I still manage to produce something I'm proud (of considering my minimal knowledge of photoshop and chaos dwarfs)

[attachment=1516]

It took 22 hours from first idea, tio finished product. I used pencil, eraser, ink, a scanner an photoshop (+ a liner... Perspektive drawing is kinda hard without Tongue)

The photoshop work consists only of the magic wand, expand, the brush and the eraser. I used a lot of opacity though most shadows get weird then converting a psd to jpg. It looked better before Tongue

I know it's bighats, but I tried to nail the banners and miniatures from the 4th edition due to a nostalgic love of their style

And here it is without any stunties:

[attachment=1517]

Any feedback is appreciated, though criticism is best if it's constructive at the same time Happy

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Scion - 06-19-2009 12:31 PM

Very cartoony. While not something I'd want to use in an army book I like it. Very smooth.

Awesome!

I'm really impressed! Takes Hat off

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Swissdictator - 06-19-2009 05:02 PM

Very nicely done. That looks like a lot of work! Very nice choice of colors, than I might be biased with a blue CD army for my first. Wink

Like it alot Malorn!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Malorn - 06-22-2009 06:06 AM

Thanks a lot peeps, it means a lot to me Cheers!

I usually draw as many different styles as possible, so I'll probably not make something in the exact style as the previous, but I have a little funny illustrator idea i will make soon, though it will only be a 2 hours work, instead of a 22 hours work Tongue Wink

It is possible, that i'll make a chaosdwarf related gamemaker og flash animation production in the far future, but it will be small, amateur and most likely cartoony. This is still a wishfull thinking, because I don't have the sparetime yet.

That's Ishkur's BC.  His work ought to be in this thread! Someone should badger him about it. Hehe.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Thommy H - 06-23-2009 12:39 PM

Yeah, I know who did it - I just want it bigger! I assume he must have given you or one of the other Admins a full-size version so it could be uploaded.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Xander - 06-23-2009 12:40 PM

No, I think I just grabbed it from his blog?  I had it somewhere, I can't recall.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Thommy H - 06-23-2009 12:44 PM

Oh okay. I'll go find it somewhere else. He gave me permission to use his artwork in my army book, so I'm trying to steal it. Mwuahahaha.

Bull Centaur, Great Taurus, Daemonsmith, and Eruption Cannon. dead

Happy with the Bull Centaur. The others could stand a redo, but I just need to keep pushing on. Deadline is August 21, and there are 11 more to do.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - wallacer - 08-12-2009 10:33 PM

They look pretty good to me.  The gun on the right doesn't actually have crew in the Indy GT list does it?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - mattbird - 08-12-2009 10:47 PM

it's theoretically a swivel gun w/ crew all together on a 40mm base (or can be a mortar, or bazooka team)

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - clam - 08-14-2009 05:55 AM

Awesome blunderbuss, m3lvin Takes Hat off - and I do think that this look will be very close to how GW would do blunderbusses (if they do them in a near future).

@mattbird
Really love the rune axeblade on the BullC. The Eruption Cannon is an interesting element. Some resemblance to the Cryx Bonejacks (Warmachine) - which I adore. Looking forward seeing it all merge together in the GT list.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - m3lvin - 08-14-2009 08:06 PM

Since you appreciated the first one, here's another one!Cheers!

Made It today, took a little longer time than the first one.
The scanner made the shadings a little grainy, but I'm still satisfied with the result.

grupax - I don't think we can thank you enough for your efforts, having someone with artistic talent like this and being willing to make contributions to the community is a gift to the rest of us as well as a great asset.  There's nothing like artwork to bring things to life and spark everyone imagination the next time they sit down to write rules, fluff, paint or make a conversion.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - m3lvin - 09-30-2009 01:37 PM

I totally agree with mattbird, and the dwarf with the huge hammer in the 2nd pic looks soooo mean, love him.

If there's any critique I could give you it's on the picture to the far right.
The face is very skillful drawn, but its to tall/thin to get the dwarven feel imo.

and btw, why dont you work for GW already? Tongue Wink

/melv

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Baggronor - 09-30-2009 07:08 PM

I really, really like the 4th one with the stark contrast.

I, too, think the portrait has too slim a facial structure for a Dwarf, but its a very decent drawing Cheers!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-01-2009 04:14 AM

Thanks for the kind words its good to know someone likes your works Big Grin
As for the portrait i see now that you are both right and thank you for pointing it out!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Scion - 10-01-2009 08:07 AM

Good idea. Happy We do have a lot of the stuff.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-02-2009 03:11 PM

Thanks Loki, and i will! Here's a new one, i think i went ahead and repeated the same mistake and made his face to tall and narrow dead.
What do you guys think?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - m3lvin - 10-02-2009 04:46 PM

A wallpaper thread is a great Idea!
I got your back on that Idea Baggronor, just start a thread, and I'll be happy to contribute aswell Cheers!

Forgefire: You got some serious skills there, I assume you use Photoshop. do you scan your sketches, or du you make them from scratch in the computer? perhaps a digital drawing board thingy? never really got friends with those Big Grin
But I do have to admit that the face is still to high/not wide enough, to get that dwarfy feel.
If you'd lowered the helm and just the eyes, to where the shadow of the helmet starts, then it would look alot more dwarfy.
Try quick in PS or MSpaint and you'll see what I mean. Wink

/melv

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-02-2009 05:09 PM

Thank you M3lvin, yup i mostly use photoshop though sometimes i scan pencil sketches and rework 'em in photoshop. And youre correct on the digital drawing board, ive got a wacom intous 4 (i think its that version atleastRespect to the Hat!).
Hmm yep im gonna try lowering his eyes a bit and see what i end up with!

And i think that a wallpaper thread would be cool too.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-12-2009 01:14 PM

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Border Reiver - 10-12-2009 04:29 PM

Really nice drawing there - I like the blending of 3rd and 5th ed elements into something new.  And the proportion and scale is well done

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-13-2009 08:26 AM

Thanks! And im glad you like the look of them! I think i need to fix a few areas on it, most importantly the champions axe. You see any other stuff that looks wrong?

Grupax ? no, you look in the corner of down of the illustration, there put "PR.." and next a name that first for the letter "a".

I'm sure that there illustration is by a spanish draftsman.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Grimstonefire - 12-20-2009 07:18 AM

Whilst the staff (xander) have some responsibilty for what is posted on the forum, imo GW legal would only be interested in the graphics hosted and used by the CDO site and wiki.

IF GW want to hit us with the IP stick again for a few links here and there so be it.  If they were to pursue every forum that had GW artwork from current books, let alone OOP ones, they would be busy for a very long time...

I may try and finds some external links for the Beavers stuff.

Problem solved. To be honest after the last round we cant have them on the site, will GW legal care? Probably not. Flying Beaver's images linked to the old wiki n the Xander's old site. AFAICR all GW images are of the current Wiki and we need to be consistent.

So judgment call here we cant really have them on the site, other sites do it but with the way GW is acting I don't think we can risk it.

There is also one other  problem Grim, GW knows this site very well...

Plus the text he had accompany this piece of art:

The Surface Warlords - Hekund Kron

Ruthless, powerful and relentless, Hekund Kron is one of the most highly skilled Chaos Dwarf sorcerers ever known in Zharr Naggrund and a daemon-engineer beyond compare. A grim master of magic, science and the martial ways, he was once feared and respected in all echelons of Dawi Zharr society, forging eldritch machines of war and blending daemonic flesh with iron in ways never seen before. Now fallen from grace by the meddling of the Skaven and the treachery of others, Hekund Kron has a grudge to settle and woe be to anyone who dares stand in his path of vengeance.

Cower in your tunnels, O Skaven, for your reckoning will soon be at hand.

Lol I can assure you no one has hired me to do anything remotely as cool as design figures for WF. As for stealing my vision, I honestly haven't seen anything that really makes me think so. There are a few bits similar to my designs, such as the CDs with no moustaches, but none of that is so unique that another designer wouldn't go through a very similar process to me. The scale armour is all the same from 5th ed and its all based on real armour anyway; the points where mine are distinctive, I would say, are the masks and shoulder plates, and the WF ones differ on those points. I'm also very careful not to break the oval silhouette of my Dwarfs with horns or spikes, but the WF ones do this a lot with hats and shoulder armour. So I don't think I've been skanked.  And anyway, my concept sketches look way cooler Tongue Wink

I would note that the painting above has cloven hoof boots, which is an idea I stole off someone else on this forum (can't remember who now) so I'm hardly innocent either Wink

I believe I can *cough* at this. Wink

Not saying I was necessarily first, but I seem to remember you being inspired by something I'd made/ drawn.

That bit of art is seriously cool, but the head is too small for GW scale dwarfs (it looks about 5.5 heads high).

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Baggronor - 04-30-2011 12:12 PM

Good stuff m8, nice to see you're working with the positive and negative space, adding on with the charcoal and taking away with the eraser. Its what its all about Cheers!

Try to define the light source better; for example the miner's face and beard are lit from the right of the picture, but in that case his right forearm (on the left of the picture) would be obscured by his body and should be in shadow. Darkening it down will push it back into the picture and give more depth, while highlighting his other arm will bring it towards the viewer and reinforce the light source. If that makes sense.

Yeah I always had trouble with the lightning source thing.
When it comes to draw sth existing, like a statue there is no problem .
The real challenge is drawing sth imaginary with no reference!

Some really great stuff here, some people with more talent in their little pinkies than I could dream of!

Wonder if anyone could help me with an art related request, about a month ago (before my pc died and I had to reinstall windows) I found a pic of a Chaos Dwarf that looked a lot like an Infernal Guard with lava effect armour that I wanted to use as the inspiration for my upcoming Chaos Dwarf army. If anyone knows the pic I'm on about (from my admittedly poor description) and could point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Well, I might as well throw in the Titan Wargames sketches I did:

Cloth Raw Material Refinement

I. Push and lever the adult slime larva onto a spiked cart.
II. Dry out all juices.
III. Impale the larva and mount it on a spin rack.
IV. Using a razor comb, flay and shred the slime larva into hide ropes.
V. Task the apprentice clothmen with carding the hide ropes into thread.

Dwarven cave fishing

I. Hook flesh and insect intestines into the net.
II. Haul the net through a lake. Big fish should be attracted by the bait and get caught. Younglings escape.
III. The gunmen shoots any large predatorial creatures threatening the catch or the net.
IV. Stumblers are left to their fate in the slimy water. The risks are too high with picking them up, and few dwarves can even swim, or dive. The careless drown.
V. The net is dragged on shore. Here, axemen liquidate the lives of larger creatures, whilst smaller ones die a slow death on land.
VI. Set the fishermen to draw the catch, then conservate it in iron barrels with minerals extracted from the salt mines. The Overlord will have a seventh of the lake food, as is his right.

Overlord Tharkuk Bloodback

The Fate of Bok Orebeard

"Carve thy mark"

"From Deepdelve came a seasoned body, of three-times-ten men, miners all.

Their leader, prospect'r Bok Orebeard, rallied strong souls, heard his call.

Through Glowdeeps, Deadmere, Kaal and Coaldelve, they reached the Deeps, were no hall.

Searching riches, trailing gems, they roped down sinkholes, climbed each wall.

Bok kept just to the Deep's outskirts, marked each tunnel, avoiding brawl.

Runes were chiseled at every spot, be it Quakesoot, Dreadnook or Hellmite's Fall.

Wonders, terrors, Goblin lairs; Bok's band mapped, and marked with tool.

Long they stumbled nigh in peace, yet still were cornered by vermin cruel.

Their dragons spat and axes bit, but the Goblins stabbed with poison cool.

All around the men collapsed, with beards deep thick with blood and drool.

Bok fled far, and marked last rock, to find in bare ground his death stool.

His last act serve those who follow, so carve thy mark if we shall rule."

Got a couple of sketches I want to show. I was planning on making something decent too before posting this, but I've promised Admiral I'd post something this week, so it's just sketches. I will be back when I have something decent.

Some conversion plannings:

Some sketches during downtime at work:

And this didn't get finished in time. When (if) it gets done, it should look pretty kewl:

Nothing wrong with sketches, especially when they're that cool. Great stuff, keep em coming.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Honeym123 - 10-06-2014 02:57 PM

Have you guys recieved leassons in drawing, or have you just started out?

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Helblindi - 10-07-2014 01:14 AM

For me it's part genetic (drawing runs in the family) and a massive amount of excercise. Drawing has been my main hobby ever since I can remember.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Dînadan - 10-07-2014 06:16 AM

I've never had formal tuition in drawing, it's all been practice for me.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Honeym123 - 10-07-2014 06:42 AM

Looking at the pictures, makes me want to learn it.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Dînadan - 10-07-2014 06:53 AM

Best advice I can give is buy a pad of paper (about A6 or A5) and just start drawing.  And keep drawing.  There's no easy road, and it's like painting minis - the more you do it, the better you'll get.  And don't get discouraged if you draw something crap, just more on and start over/start a new drawing.  I'd also recommend not pressing hard on the pencil, start with light strokes and mark out a stick/sausage figure skeleton, then go back over pressing a little harder to fill in the details.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - TheHoodedMan - 10-07-2014 04:25 PM

After these encouraging words I tried a sketch on a slavetrader, thinking about new evil plans, beholding his bloody gold after selling his ware to the priests of Hashut.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-07-2014 04:33 PM

That's a great sketch in so many ways, although the proportions are mannish and not ball-round GW Dwarfy. Otherwise it's great work! Keep it up, I hope to see more from you in the future. Happy

As for me, I've had some training, but drawing/painting has just been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. It's also genetic and runs in the family on both mother's and dad's sides.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - MadHatter - 10-07-2014 04:36 PM

I like the realism, good job!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Helblindi - 10-08-2014 02:13 AM

Looks great. I must agree with Admiral, it's more the anatomy of a human, but I find it very hard to get a dwarf's proportions right.

As to learning how to draw, practice is key, of course. But there are some tips that will help you progress faster. At the moment, two things come to mind that really helped me a lot, so I'm guessing they may be helpful to anyone.

-don't go for realism right away. Accept you own level of art and work at that level (most of the time, going just a bit above your own level of skill every now and then, will help you learn a lot too). That means starting out in a more cartoonish fashion. Just make sure people will recognise what you draw, and that you can give faces the expression you want. As you get better, you'll be able to get more realistic aswell. But starting with realistic stuff can really slow you down. That was the case for me, at least.

-very lightly draw the overall shape of each body/structure before detailing. That way, you can quickly see if the proportions are right, and if not, you can start again without losing more that a few minute's work. You will need to develop a feeling for anatomic proportions through practice, but a lot of that practice can be done by drawing anatomically correct stickmen, and only adding the details when you're happy with pose and proportions.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - TheHoodedMan - 10-08-2014 08:19 AM

Thank you for the feedback, I have to admit that you are right regarding the proportions.
I was away from drawing a few years but I hope to quickly get better.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-08-2014 08:23 AM

Well, you're already good, so it won't take much to become super at it. Wink

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Loidrial - 03-16-2015 05:01 AM

Hi there, yesterday I started this draw, it is still obviously a WIP, I just wanted to know your opinion too

This is the original one I'm making

And this is the one with the more classic CD colors

What do you think?
I realised 2 minutes ago that the hat seems to have a stupid face on it with the nose being the arrow, the eyes the icon and the teeth the zigzag part.
Cant be unseen, now I have to change it Sad

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Bloodbeard - 03-16-2015 05:17 AM

I like number two the best and don't see any faace in the hat. Really cool piece man!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Loidrial - 03-16-2015 06:13 AM

Ok I will develop the red one, what do you prefer? cant go with orange beard because it will be all red.
Blue beard or black/graysh?
I should be able to finish it today, and if you like it you can use it on the wiki

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Loidrial - 03-16-2015 11:46 AM

Modified it a bit and this is the result.
What do you people think?

But very nice colour and shadow improvement.

Both sorcerers have some sort of wings on the staff, I just went for a slightly different one, now I'm going to work on his eyes, they look indeed sad.

AAAAAAAND done.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Parish - 03-16-2015 12:37 PM

I think it is well executed !

Good work !!

True, the Big Hat sorcerers have some sort of wings on the staff and that's stupid. You asked what people think and that's what I think. Bat-like wings on sorcerer's staff are stupid. They are in no way magic related and don't fit to Chaos Dwarfs in general.

But overall I think you made a good drawing.

At the moment, the wings look alive , detached from the animal. If you want allusions winged bull - stylize them in metal. By the way your icon is very familiar ))!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Loidrial - 03-24-2015 02:08 PM

I had some ideas for the bull draw, i made 3 different sketches for the torso.
What do you people think is the best? (and why?) so I will try to go where the community prefer, trying to make eventually a nice pic for the wiki.

SO far my fav is the one with shield

Like the Dane said! Wink

Good thing drawing for the wiki. That deserves a couple of slaves.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Dînadan - 03-24-2015 02:54 PM

Agreed on the first one.  One thing though, with the Rune of Hashut, the > should have the point pointing away from the weapon haft and the wider side facing the haft (see the hero and BC minis that bare the rune on their axes).

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 03-24-2015 04:03 PM

I think Ancient History established there was no established, correct way for the rune to face if one looks on the old big hat minis. Turn it whatever way you like. Quite fitting for Chaos Dwarfs.

Admiral Wrote:

Actually on the old big hats, the four who bear the rune all have it as I said, but two have the three | pointing up and the other two have it pointing down.  That said, there's no fluff stating that it has to be that way, but it does seem more fitting as that's what the minis have Wink

Three differently tweaked versions of the same drawing. The first image is the untouched scanned version, paled-out as usual; the second drawing is adjusted closest to the real original; and the third version is a photo editor refinement attempt.

The scene is that of Takurta the Concubine receiving Sorcerer-Prophet Karunezharr Steelbeard, from the Chaos Star Fort story:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - tjub - 10-09-2015 12:00 AM

Wonderful piece Admiral, really like the twisted feel to it. Do you enjoy comics like "Crossed"? Happy

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Forgefire - 10-09-2015 02:39 AM

Cool!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-12-2015 02:54 PM

Tackar! Takes Hat off

@tjub: Haha, no no, far from it. I'm too childish for that, so Donald Duck, Beetle Bailey or Marvin Meathead is about my comic level.

Of course, when dealing with very evil Chaos Dwarfs, you usually have to add some grotesque details as you go along. In this scene it was the knife cuts, since the big hatted CD man in the picture was sadistic in the story, and this should show in the drawing.

Finished one slave march drawing for the Stormforged Axe story. Since I drew small figures on a small area of paper (smaller than the picture size on screen), and with not the best rubber gum or pencil, it turned out shoddy. My inexperience with landscape only adds to that. Better than nothing, I guess.

The first image is the original, paled out in the scan as usual. The second picture is of the photo editor-adjusted one:

This one turned out better, thanks in some part to a shoddy pencil breaking down and having to be replaced. Like the drawing above, it's earmarked for the Stormforged Axe story.

And a worship scene:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-13-2015 07:44 PM

Thank you, guys!

Next drawing up for the Stormforged Axe, this time featuring impalement atrocities, because of psychological warfare terror tactics found in the Chaos Dwarfs' historical basis of ancient Assyrians. Impaled in a dung heap included because of gross humiliation factor:

And a beardcut one for the same story:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - tjub - 10-13-2015 11:47 PM

Great work there Admiral!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-17-2015 07:40 AM

Tack så mycket, tjub!

And a shot Orc, for the same story. With a Chaos Dwarf giving the "bull":

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Abecedar - 10-18-2015 12:27 AM

A CD gesture should have two fingers up to be a "Bull".
I'm picturing the two outer fingers extended up, like the kids hold up at rock concerts but reversed

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-18-2015 10:30 AM

We have something like that too:

And here's a desperate but stupid Goblin slave trying to chew off his leg to get free from the leg iron inside a cage... while a Hobgoblin views it with glee. As before, drawn for the Stormforged Axe story:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Bloodbeard - 10-18-2015 02:10 PM

Now I remember! Your art was looking like something I had seen before, haven't been able to figure what it was.

It reminds me of the old "Sværd og Troldom" books. In english they were called "Fighting Fantasy".

My absolute favourite was Steve Jackson's "Sorcery". Read them many times, played them with my kids and even have them as an app on my phone.

Just checked the wiki-page for them. Turns out the artist for those books are... John Blanche!

Must be the biggest complement I've given you yet Admiral.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-18-2015 02:44 PM

Well, you did call me a creative genius once... Tongue Wink

Thank you very much, Bloodbeard! That's a huge compliment indeed, but of course I'm nowhere near the skill level of John Blanche. There's a living legend, and a virtual machine churning out awesome sketches at breakneck speed!

Also, you've now unintentionally planted in my head the crazy notion of contacting John Blanche to ask him if he'd be interested to make a quick community-dedicated Chaos Dwarf sketch for use in a certain community project involving a certain heavily illustrated story... Well, where's the harm in asking?

Exquisite artwork, Forgefire! It's truly an honour to have a talented artist illustrate a story you wrote with a well-crafted piece as this. Takes Hat off

You might want to post your artwork in your showcase section as well, and on Deviantart Art too if you already haven't done so. The more chances people have to come across this artwork, the better. Vrålsnyggt!

Great artwork Forgefire! The raiding warband is a very good painting of yours, and it's fascinating to see the five brothers with their cursed artefacts in an image when you've written the story. I like what we see in your take on them! They're a characterful bunch of Chaos Dwarfs, and the items themselves look neat!

Heave your ale, you know you've well deserved it with that hard painting work. Cheers!

Second Rune = ? Fire / Lava maybe.  its on the axe haft and has a similar look the fire/lava rune in Khazalid.
Third Rune = Pact / Oath

Would you translate it as "Chaos Dwarf to swear an oath on / with Fire?

My god, that's incredible. The light effect is stunning. He's a malevolent looking little bastard, just the way I like 'em. Amazing piece of work.

Has anyone thought about the possibility of an ad hoc Voice of Hashut? CDO has so much to show off to the world. The heathens could use a reminder that the Dawi Zharr yet endure IMHO.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 02-18-2016 06:07 AM

Now that's a beauty, if something involving Goblins can be labelled as such. Great work, Forgefire! The blackness of the whole piece along with the clear highlights is expertly achieved. You can see the whole gobbo clearly, yet you are in no doubt he sits in darkness. Skillful work!

@Roark: We need someone skilled at putting together magazines. I've looked into a free program called Scribus, but it sadly beyond my meagre abilities. If we could get someone to do all the layout work to a decent standard, we'd have more than enough material (tutorials, painting competitions, interviews with evil dwarf producers...) for a normal WoH, and better up we could even release a separate booklet with illustrated stories.

That time paid off, though. Very tasteful colours and details. Great artwork! Cheers!

It seemed appropriate to illustrate a battlefield hymn.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Malorndk - 07-04-2016 12:16 AM

Hey guys. I have a quick question, and can not get myself to check these 21 pages unless I know it's in there somewhere:

Is there any existing artwork or sketches of a Chaos Dwarf fleet? Manowar/Dreadfleet/fanmade? I don't think I have any seen any.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 08-18-2016 03:10 PM

Petterwass recently commissioned CDO's very own John Blake, a.k.a. Baggronor the forgemaster, to illustrate his Overlady who has performed exceptionally well on tabletop. The result is a piece of art he surely must be proud of:

Woah! That Is Great!

Blazing icons, brazen blades, burning trenches, the fiery haze of battle. It has everything we could ask for from a chaos dwarf battle field scene! Amazing piece.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Jackswift - 08-19-2016 12:02 PM

Nicely done and very striking.  The background details such as the flying Taurus/Lamassu and Hellcannons really add to the scene.

nice at all!

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Admiral - 10-05-2016 02:23 AM

Here's my entry from the concept art contest. Had hoped to paint a picture for it as well, but time ran out. It's a concept for some planned evil Dwarf sculpts, Faceless Ones, infernal torturers, slavers and terror troops for psychological warfare on steroids:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork - Jackswift - 10-05-2016 12:08 PM

One of my favorites.  Love the span of weapons and implements in the drawings.  You should make a unit of these with weapon options... in your spare time... Cheers!

Stellar work for that contest, chaps! Hard to choose favourites.

Scanner has broken down so this is photographed with the phone camera. Shaky, not quite straight (it is in the actual drawing thanks to ruler) and still with a hint of brown warmth which has nothing to do with reality, but here is the next illustration for the Stormforged Axe, for the murder of one of the most powerful men in Zharr-Naggrund:

Just rememembered these I did years ago; not Chaos Dwarfs, but they are evil Dwarves so worth sharing I think.

[attachment=5434][attachment=5435]

They were...true haters of Morgoth and his servants; and at first had regarded the Dwarves askance, fearing that they were under the Shadow...*

*For they had met some far to the East who were of evil mind...Alas, it seems probable that (as Men did later) the Dwarves of the far eastern mansions...came under the Shadow of Morgoth and turned to evil.

The highly talented Raul Gomes (t5p1ny) is a CDO member, see this thread. Happy

Added all the Artisan's Contest XXIII entries to the first page compilation. Every artist is invited to post their image here as well, and elaborate on it if they wish.

As for mine, it's based upon a Babylonian tower but with sloping sides (slight lightning bolt-resemblance). Equipped with swivel guns and a movable signal mirror with brazier on top for relaying semaphore messages to neighbouring watchtowers and mechanized war caravans in the surroundings. Armoured door requires a ladder to reach from the ground, or something high such as an Iron Daemon train stopping by. It's just a simple flat-from-the-side view, no perspective involved. If I were to redo it, I'd add some riveted iron bands with larger spikes to its corners and flat wall sides to up the Chaotic impression:

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork & Concept Sketches - Dînadan - 12-15-2017 09:11 AM

Here’s my entry for Artisan’s XXIII:

As I mentioned in the comp announcement thread, I don’t feel like it adequately conveys the various features I envisioned for it, but I didn’t have the energy to do proper schematics for it, but I do have a couple of rough sketches I did at the time which I can post now with annotations to explain things:

The idea is that the tower is built around machinery for pumping magma which is used for several of its features.
1) the first feature is a signalling device.  This is a set of four twelves-sided blocks stacked atop one another (there is one set of blocks in each side of the tower), with a different symbol on each side of the block; see the third pic for a ‘list’ of the twelve symbols.  They’re controlled by levers on the level above; a signalman watches through binoculars, looking at the next tower ready to read their signals and/or relay signals back.  Idea is there’s a network of these towers throughout the Dark Lands.
2) the second feature is four lamasuu gargoyles (one per side).  If attackers are in danger of breaching a gate the defenders can open the flow and pour magma out onto them.
3) at the base of the steps and at each level on the steps there are vent that can vent flames out under the feet of any attackers that reach that point.

For non-magma based defences:
1) each level has a number of firing slots from which the defenders can fire on attackers.
2) inside instead of conventional floors there is a ‘chasm’.  Idea behind this is that if attackers breach the gates, they have to fight their way all the way down to the ground and then all the way back up, the intention being to allow the signalmen to keep working as long as possible.  The outer ‘rings’ have no wall/baulistrade along their chasm side whereas the inner ‘rings’ do, that way the defenders have cover while the attackers don’t.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork & Concept Sketches - Dînadan - 12-17-2017 03:24 PM

Another sketch I did the other day:

The Order of Things

The idea is it’s a monument/sculpture depicting the order of Chaos Dwarf society; at the top is Hashut, then the Sorcerers and Overlords, then the regular Dawi Zharr, then the hobgoblins and finally the slaves.

RE: A Compilation of Chaos Dwarf Artwork & Concept Sketches - Jackswift - 12-18-2017 01:14 AM

The Wandering Tower of the Mad Inventor Kadzak Teg'melech

The last invention of the Mad Inventor Kadzak Teg'melech was a brilliant re-visualization of the common border watchtower.  Teg'melech envisioned a fortification that could patrol itself, carrying the border unit, and thereby providing much needed protection from the terrible threats that prowl the northern chaos wastes.

The tower itself was a massive construction of stone and steel. The components magically congealed using lost and clever artifice so that it would not disintegrate under the jarring vibration of it's weighted, noisome, juddering steps.

The construct's engine was a bound K'daai of fearsome size who's living furnace provided unceasing power to the massive pistons and steam works driving the behemoth.

While a novel concept, the proof thereof was less than satisfactory. The poor souls doomed to be assigned to the tower were banged and bumped, and vibrated to jelly, a slow, painful, calamitous internal degeneration from the constant pounding of the machine's gait.

The result was that the tower became the most dreaded post in the entire waste, a slow sentence to guaranteed death or insanity.  Only the worst of criminals, slaves, and societal outcasts who simply failed too miserably and obviously in their machinations toward power, were assigned there as penance.  The culmination of the towers record was a fateful night wherein the towers overseer, his mind sundered into tortured shards from from 18 months of crushing tread... somehow managed to circumvent the safeguards on the infernal machine's engine.  The K'daai, ecstatic to retaliate against the pain of it's binding, blasted out in a superheated furnace of destruction. The tower's occupants were incinerated in place, and the flare was seen for miles around.  Alas, the towers construction was so meticulous that despite the breach, the core bindings remained in place, and the tower continued on; it's skillfully wrought machinery grinding endlessly across the blasted landscape.

It is said that there were many initial attempts to regain the tower, but the engine itself succumbed to madness and all who breached it's walls were destroyed.  The marvel itself has faded to mere legend, though travelers tales abound of strange and fearful encounters.   On certain nights, the light of the stars bleed down into the chaos below, and a giant walking tomb trundles with titanic crab-like steps, to and fro across the landscape, on it's doomed and ceaseless mission.

----------
Ahem... Run-on sentence much?  As the contest was announced I got the idea to make a walking or wandering tower even before I finished reading through the announcement.  Ideas for the fluff that ultimately ended up above were already popping into my head.  The initial sketch looked very close to the final:

The artwork itself is wax pencil ('prismacolor' brand which are common in the US) on 'Canson' paper (that is the brand again and there is probably another name for it that I cannot think of) which is basically like fine quality construction paper with texture on one side.  The texture can be used to bring out the detail.  I first laid out the core lines in a light grey and moved on from there:

Below is the artwork as posted to the contest:

I really struggled to get a good shot and much of the detail was lost trying to keep the color good across the image.  The below close-up shows some of the detail missing from the full shot.  The shot is kind of washed out, but it does show the detail and brick work better than the final:

Cheers,

Now that is certainly interesting.

This will sound weird but the part I like this most? The lava! It flows really well.

Did you try to scan the image? Maybe this isn`t perfect, too, but the lighting would be good distributed over the picture.

Ok EvilMidgets brethren.

Starting with nothing fancy here, just three sketches i've been doing lately. I've yet to get hold on the CDs appareances and flavour but, i've to start somewhere! Let me know!

I'll post a lot hopefully here, also complete artworks. I work on traditional techniques so, you'll see also some oil painting and watercolors in the future!

As someone who draws rather flat characters and try to spice it up with shading and highlighting for more of a 3D illussion, my first impression of your work is wow, you truly can capture a sense of roundness and depth, and it's all characterful to boot! Skill and visions apparent for sure. Great style. Looking forward to see more!
