Is there ever a reason to use one? I really feel they are fluffy, generally cool and giving a pip of leadership to Centaurs so a general dosent need to do any babysitting aint half bad. But is there any more roles? I was thinking Blackshard Armour, Great Weapon, the Other Tricksters Shard and Talisman of Endurance. Then load him into a three man unit of Bull Centaurs and launch him like a missile against the nastiest lord the enemy is having. I feel our BsB or our lord is a bit to important to take on a Assasin role and the Daemonsmith is to weak to take on anything nasty.
This buld is 260 pts though so he might be a VERY pricey assasin. If only they could take the BsB upgrade....

forget the blackshard armour, and buy him an enchanted shield... much cheaper!
I use my tau'ruk in a unit of BC, and haven't been disappointed thus far. As soon as you break through your opponent's line, you can let him go and do some warmachine hunting on his own.

My thoughts exactly!

I think in a unit of three Bull Centaurs he's awesome, and if the unit takes the gleaming pennant or leadership banner they become very reliable. And as Zuh-Khinie said you can always detach him midgame for whatever role you decide.

Like you say though he can be expensive but I think he has some powerful roles which can help other units do the actual damage output. His best quality in my eyes is not dying!

The Crown of Command and a Luckstone is all mine ever gets (with a Great Weaopn and Blackshard Armour of course).  He's done some serious damage out there.

I just can't bring myself to pay the 15 point for +1 armour save of Blackshard! There's better standard magic armours he could have like the dragon helm + charmed shield. Same points as blackshard but instead of 2+ 5++(fire) you get 1+ 2++(fire) 2+++(first hit). And you can still have Crown of Command and Luckstone.

I think he works if you have the luxury of the points to spend on him - in big games, he definitely has a utility, but if your Hero points are scarce, there are just better investments. No way you should be taking him over a Castellan BSB.

MLP: You can only have one piece of eachtype of magic gear. That includes diffrent types of Magic Armour.
Which is why they should have acess to the BsB upgrade.

Ah bugger, I suppose you could just give him a normal shield instead. My point was more that there's better value things than Blackshard for him Happy

I totally agree. It almost seems like they missed that bit out as he'd be perfect!

It's a very good character, good stats, resilient.
Major downside : we must have bull centaurs, he can't be the BSB.
Major drawback : very tough, it can be a killing machine pretty easily :
Sword of striking, great weapon as weapons : 2+ to hit S5, or S7
enchanted shield, charmed shield, dragon helm, blackshard armour as armours : pretty easy to get a 1+ save
Crown of command, luckstone, dawn stone, or a ward save as talisman.

I'm going to use one for the first time for an upcoming 2 day tournament (SAWS).  He's going to lead a unit of 5 Bull Centaurs (he makes the unit 6 strong).  I gave him the Dragonhelm, Dawnstone, Golden Sigil Sword and a shield.  Dragonhelm + shield is 15 points and adds +2 to his armor save with a 2+ward against fire.  Blackshard is 15 points for just a +1 armor save.  The gold sigil sword is 10 points and gives him Initiative 10, meaning he'll strike first in just about every combat (something that is sorely lacking with initiative 2 choas dwarfs). I was tempted to go with the Great Weapon, but he's already S5 so he's going to be able to wound most things.  I was worried that if I went up against a Vampire army (almost guaranteed in a two day tourney) and had the whole Centaur unit (inluding my Taur'ruk) held up the whole game with a unit of ghosts or wraiths.  I really felt I needed some magical attacks.  Same reason why I made sure at least one of my Warmachines (Magma Cannona) was Hellbound.  Basically, this guy is a total of 210 points, has a re-rollable 1+ armor save, 2+ ward against fire, initiative 10, with 4 magical attacks at S5.  Not bad with 5 other Bull Centaurs backing him up.

I was going to put the Black hammer on him but army builder wouldn't let me do it (didn't appear in my magic item list).  I looked at the magic item list in the book and it says "Chaos Dwarf" only.  Bull Centaur Renders aren't listed as Chaos Dwarf Bull Centaur Renders and the Taur'ruk isn't listed as a Chaos Dwarf Bull Centaur Taur'ruk.  So, I'm thinking he can't take it. At least the guy who built the army builder LOA list thinks so.

By the way, i'm also thinking that if I encounter something like some Hex Wraiths, I'll probably just charge the Taur'ruk by himself.  He should be able to handle them on his own.  No reason to tie up the whole unit when they can't do anything.

Oh... that nerfs him... Hard... I do want magical attacks on him to spare my general any ghosts....
How about we add the Sword of Anti-Heroes on him?
Oh and that makes the hammer worse.... There goes the only magical weapon i liked.
I agree about the Taur'ruk dealing with some ghosts alone.

This is my problem.

With everything so pricey... their is not much wiggle room. If the wolfriders had been core instead of rare, I could remove the hobgoblin heros & perhaps just squeeze in the tau'ruk. Or if the Taur'uk did not need a unit of Bull Centaurs to be fielded....ahh decisions decisions.

It was pretty easy for me because I had been putting my Lord on a Bale Taurus and was only using a unit of 4 BC's.  I was finding that the 4 BC's would struggle against things like Trolls and needed some extra punch.  My Lord was semi-vulnerable on the Taurus so I decided to ground him and that alone freed up 225 points.  It basically paid for the Taur'ruk and with some other, minor changes (like dropping the GW from the Centaurs), I was able to get another Bull for a total unit of 6 (included the Taur'ruk).  The Lord already had the Crown of Command so simply adding him to my second unit of Infernal Guard gives me two units that are stubborn (BSB is in the other).  Overall, I think I have better list:

nice list. Im about to turn mine in. went with IG units of 30 and fireborne (you talked me into it). how did you do on comp? I made the list to get a good score, got a 26/27. I couldnt get the 1250 core, it was too high.

I'm going to give the BC's another chance (I think what I have above will help them perform a lot better).  If they don't come through I'll switch over to the Fireborn for Quake City Rumble and see how they perform.  You'll have to let me know how they do.  I got a 21 out of 27.  I could have bumped my core above 640 points (all I had to do was buy a 10 point magic banner for one of my Guard units) and got a 22.  Just wasn't worth the extra point of comp to me.  If I end up losing overall by a point (which won't happen) I'll end up regretting it. :-)
