Down to Moss Goblin Town! Hobbit/LOTR Goblin Army Blog [UPDATE: 23/01/14]Sticklander 01-07-2014

And down down to Goblin-town,

You go, my lad.

This Christmas, I decided to get something both myself and my little brother could work on, as he is interested in Warhammer, but just can't quite get into it.

So I decided to buy for him (and myself, really) the Escape From Goblin Town boxset.

Soon after the initial excitement of him opening it, we decided that he will paint Thorin's Comapny and have them, whereas I, naturally, own the evil side, that of the Goblins.

First is first, we sprayed all the models whilst on their sprues:

Lots of fiddling about with sticking sprues upright..

I intend to use this blog to update both on my own progress with the goblins, and my brother's with the Company, however, I have been painting goblins whilst he has been doing other things.. Oops.

However, whilst at work, the idea struck me to paint the Goblins as if their skin was the same colour as rock, but was more like a crust on them, rather than their skin actually being rock. Also, moss grows on them, because... Imagination! Wink

Here's my three test goblins together:

Originally I had planned not to paint the Great Goblin until last, but I couldn't resist..

Here's how he looks now:

Yes, that is real moss.

Let me know what you think! Hopefully I should be able to show you some of my brother's progress with Thorin's Company soon!

Wow. Somebody starting the Hobbit system :O

Having now recovered from the shock; fantastic, this is certainly going to be a unqiue look for your army, I look forward to seeing how you go over the next few weeks.

The box is such a great set especially some of the company models. (They may not be Chaos, but i have a soft spot for all stunties.)

Keep us posted.

Happy

Realistically Yodrin, with all new release for the hobbit apparantly being only in failcast from now on, I can't see all that many people starting it as a system.

Moss!
How cool is that?
It looks pretty nice!!!
...But how will it hold up though? Can it be sealed with some sort of clear coating to maintain it? I've never used any sort of organic material in my models, so I'm curious how it's done.
Can't wait to see them all done up and completed, kudo's for such an inventive idea Takes Hat off

That looks great! Original idea you have there.

Will it hold? Being smacked to the ground in games.

RE: Down to Moss Goblin Town... The Hobbit Goblin Army BlogSticklander 01-07-2014

@AndyG: Well, someone had to! Wink I hear it's very similar to the LOTR system, and both can be played together, so I thought why not!
The dwarf figures were a big part of the reason why I got the box, although they are not mine, per se. Also, the Radagast miniature is quite interesting!

@Yodrin: Thank you! Big Grin

@Fuggit: Thanks! So far, it's keeping pretty well. Moss tends to last longer than most plant life, but it might start falling off. Luckily the big patches are staying strong. I'm not sure what I'd use to seal it, and all it's stuck down by is PVA glue!

@Bloodbeard: That suggests I'd let someone smack The Great Moss Goblin to the ground! Wink
I fear the biggest danger to his lush mane is my own fiddling with it! haha

Update: Painted the basecoat and bases of 11 Goblins this evening, and my brother has finished Bilbo, and has begun work on Gandalf. They look good, so far! I'll post pictures once Gandalf is done as well!

Yes, basically it's the latest edition of LotR  just under a different name. The rules are, on the whole, the same, and all the old models can be used.
It was renamed in an attempt to make it more popular.

I suppose it makes sense to re-name, so new customers (the few that exist) won't get confused.

It's proper that I should return to the LOTR strategy game, as it was the wargaming game I started with.

RE: Down to Moss Goblin Town! Hobbit/LOTR Goblin Army BlogSticklander 01-11-2014

UPDATE: Basecoated and highlighted the remaining goblins in the first (of the two that are included in the box) unit. I was going to paint them all together, as in I would paint each of their weapons at the same time, but I find that method easily gets boring, so I've decided to complete each one individually.

Here is the unit:

This evening I've completed two other goblins, Gobbat (left), and Foe-Rest Gob' (right).

I decided to wash them in Agrax Earthshade, so to make them appear more filthy and covered in earthy muck. After going a bit "trigger happy" on my first free models, wash wise, I toned it down with Gobbat and Foe-Rest Gob' so it doesn't make them look so shiny.

Also, I'd like to introduce you to Goblit (far left), Gobily (far right), and Gobble (centre).
They're sort of, kind of, meant to resemble (in the best way possible) myself and my girlfriend, and Gobble is our imaginary goblin child, because we don't have a (and I'm very happy to say this) real child. She finds him adorable (I think it's the name mostly), and isn't altogether flattered with her Goblin alter ego..

That's all for now, but I'm really enjoying painting these guys. I think it may be the theme that's gotten my imagination going or something. Or it may be because I want to get on and make their lair, and finally have a game with my brother!

RE: Down to Moss Goblin Town! Hobbit/LOTR Goblin Army Blog [UPDATE: 12/01/14]Sticklander 01-14-2014

Yet another update! And my 200th post! Huzzah! Cheers!

Painted a few more of the moss ridden fellows.

Still trying to think of some names for the fellas below, but there is a back story for the chap with the golden axe. Since the axe looked mildly dwarfish, I thought that his great great great (etc) grandmoss father might have stolen it from a Dwarven horde, during the Goblin Wars, and it has been passed down from Mossfather's Mossling to the next. (as you can probably tell, I'm getting quite into the spirit of this army..)

I wanted to bulk the ranks of the moss goblins, but I knew I'd end up with a lot of models in similar poses. If they all had the same pose, I'd be fine with it (for example: plastic big hats!), but they don't.

So I decided to try and give some extra life to other models, for example:

From left to right, you have Batgob, Gobolf Chief Hunter, and Chef who runs the grim and bloody kitchens, and dire and foul pantries of Goblin Town.

I have a feeling the Chaos Dwarfs are going to start developing abandonment issues..

Coming along nicely...I especially like Batgob and the Chef. I love when people add a bit of 'fun' to their armies/units...keeping the fun in the game with such a clever touch makes it all more worthwhile.
Nice work Mister Sticklander Cheers!

I entirely agree! Especially in a game where armies can start to look so repetitive!

I suppose you would know about injecting character into one's models!

RE: Down to Moss Goblin Town! Hobbit/LOTR Goblin Army Blog [UPDATE: 14/01/14]Sticklander 01-15-2014

I just discovered that there's a type of luminescent moss called Schistostega, that according to the wikipedia article is also known as, 'goblin's gold'.

This fuels my imagination even more!

RE: Down to Moss Goblin Town! Hobbit/LOTR Goblin Army Blog [UPDATE: 14/01/14]Sticklander 01-23-2014

Finished the first unit of 18 Goblins! And that's also pledge complete for January!

After some advice from some LOTR SBG forums, I've decided not to give all the models an earthshade wash, but i am overall pleased with how the unit looks!

Here's some pictures!

Details on their moss spots, which I've done for all of them.

And lastly, my two favourite models from the group:

As much fun as these guys are to paint, they're simple enough to do inbetween bigger projects, so I don't need to focus on them too much.

Now, to return to our big hatted friends! Cheers!
