A little nugget I found whilst reading the entire timeline of G&F

If you look up Scribd Realm of Chaos:  Lost and the Damned, p56 is a story about them discovering a dying dwarf and then fighting some Chaos Dwarfs.

The most intriguing part is them saying that sometimes after death they revert back to ordinary dwarfs again, after the influence of the Great Mutator is gone.

Big stuff!

Thoughts?

"Lies! All lies! Heresy and blasphemy. Burn the witch!" Hashut!

I can see some reversion of mutations occurring upon death (Dark Gods save their souls from an afterlife dictated by Hashut...) in some individuals given that Chaos in general and Hashut in particular must be waging an eternal tug-of-war with the extremely resilient Dwarfen nature. One could even see this as Dwarfen anti-magical biology being more stubborn than Chaos itself come death, in some cases. A fullscale reversion of mutations across the entire race of Dawi Zharr would have been a laughable concept, but sporadic reversion as is the case here?

Good stuff, and with certain implications for funerary practices.

How do you treat dead relatives who have lost some or even all bodily gifts from the Father of Darkness? There are implications of taboos, practices of discreet disposal or covering of bodies (cremation? cover up the corpse for burial?) and not least a visible judgement upon the conduct in life of the Chaos Dwarf. Wouldn't a Dawi Zharr who reverts back into a semblance of their shunned ancestral form be forsaken by the Father of Darkness and Greater Chaos? Would this matter be hushed up by the clan? Would an open dishonour ceremony take place, where reverters' blasphemous corpses are obliterated in e.g. Soulfurnaces?

There is an entire dimension of life and practices surrounding death here that opens up for the Blacksmiths of Chaos and their baleful society. There could be great men who excelled in life yet were found wanting upon death, and had their brilliant legacy smeared, hidden or defaced. Reversion of mutations upon death would be a gnawing fear in the hearts of any Chaos Dwarf, throughout their long and ruthless lives. They have no control over it, and does not know if they will revert. But if they do, their precious memory among kin, descendants (if they're lucky enough to marry and have children) and tribe would be corrupted, cast into ashes or even obliterated. There would be hush-hush, watchful eyes of neighbours, rivals and the Temple Priesthood. There would be secret fears common to all Chaos Dwarfs bar the sorcerous castes which instead petrify and retain their form, marked by the Bull God and Greater Chaos, for eternity in solid stone.

This also gives a new angle on the wearing of masks and full body armour to conceal your entire body in battle. If you die, your clansfolk can spirit you away without someone seeing your reversed mutations.

If open-face burials come into question for some clans or followers of some Sorcerer-Prophets adhering to various strains of convoluted tradition, then one could easily see faked mutations and marks of Chaos being visited upon the corpse. Fake horns, tusks and so on, to mimic the deceased one in life. Shameful deceit, but not nearly as shameful as the community's discovery of reverted mutations.

Grimdark.

Speaking of Chaos Dwarfs in Black Library publications, wasn't there some mention around CDO of some book or another featuring a siege of some Chaos Dwarf stronghold, where old infertile women had their tongues ripped out and were forced into a military unit of Hags?

That's some great fluff there Admiral.

Why do I have an image in my mind of the sombre mood in zharr naggrund after a campaign, with all the caskets coming back for burial.

The low born cd who reverted left on the battlefield to rot.

Then at the back of the long procession the cd known towage reverted, but important enough to bring back.

Then next up the line (lowest importance at the back) are those who didn't revert

Then right at the front anyone important.  Who would be wearing a death mask regardless.  As a superstition perhaps.

That's indeed how it would be done. With any freshly petrified sorcerer up front, held high and proud by his former followers.

Hierarchy, symbolism, mysticism, intricate rules. This is what Chaos Dwarf social life is all about.
