Looks very nice at first glance. Takes Hat off

But since I don't feel like turning the monitor, it would be nice if you could turn the pictures 180 degrees! Wink

Coming along nicely! The RA models are nice aren’t they. Love the Iron Daemon and Magma cannon. Just a tip for the cannon wheels, an old shield will cover the hub caps well or some green stuff/milliput with spikes (old blades from a bit box or even cut down cocktail sticks). You could make a chaos star out of old plastic  (I used a margarine lid) but the wheels look small and that could be fiddly. Depends if you like the curves on the cannon chassis if not cut old plastic to form rectangular plates and glue them on. Tiny blebs of gs can do the job of rivets. I love the army and just offer some tips from an old cheapskate!

Very nice! Though I have to confess I'm not good at standing on my hands.

Go forth boldly, and tell your Language Arts teacher that Jabble is hereby formally and by full official weight of power and overbearing authority a Word, the Word, and an approved Word, by unholy and baleful decree from the Father of Darkness, He who is Hashut on high, and woe betide the heathen who would dare to contradict the fiery Bull God's divine and hellish will.

Hashut!

So spake the Sorcerer-Prophet. Only kidding. Or perhaps not. Tongue Wink

You may want to do something with the car wheels, to blunt the modern technology look on that part of the conversion. Best of all would be side-mounted wooden or steel wheels (as on cannon carriages, as opposed to wheels mounted inside and under the chassis as on cars), perhaps from Lego cannons?

A lot can be done if you work on a budge (I know from experience) so i'll keep an eye out for this tread.
But for now my advise would be crop and turn your photos before uploading, any smartphone can do that for you if you dont have access to Photoshop and the likes.
keep up the good work

Gargolock's Experience being a broke kid trying to make an armyGargolock 03-15-2019

It’s been a while.
Christmas is past, Hope you all had a merry one. New Years has past, Hope you had a happy one. Valentine’s Day has past, hope you all had a lovely one. We approaching Easter, hope you will all have a happy one. (I have had to keep editing this part as for some reason I just haven’t posted it since when I initially wrote it on December 27. I have just kept adding stuff to it.)

I apologize for the upside down photos in the last post. Don’t know what happened there. I swear they were right side up for me when I uploaded them.  But anyways its the present and I have a bit to show today. I got a great jabble (I will keep using this until it is added to the dictionary) of lovely miniature as gifts for Christmas that I have been working on. I will get right to the point. I did my first bit of practice sculpting work.
For you see my army was missing two things in its heroes and artillery crews. Those are big hats and proper beards (also fangs but let’s forget about that.) I so far have only done the beards on them but I swear that they will all be marvellously big hatted by the end.

So time to show what I have done.

If you are wondering how I did the beards I used a tutorial made by Bob’s Random Paint-O-Matical. He is the same man who inspired my dreadquake.

Starting out I will tell you that every model I have showed so far except the old ral partha ones (still working on them) have been given mighty chaos dwarven beards.
Here’s some of the highlights.

I also got some pyrophants. They are Nolzur’s DND unpainted models with some minor changes. They are the guys on the right and left in that photo.

Next is a mighty lord. A scary bugger as he is a beast on tabletop. The mighty Zhatan The Black. I am mostly happy with him. I used the base of that old sky lander I mutilated to make my hellcannon as his base. I used a Chaos warriors champion cape and sculpted more fur to create The Black Mantle. He was created from a DND unpainted dwarf paladin with heavy editing.

Here is my new Tjublings I got from the Artisans Contest as random draw. A very fun paint. I have always liked 15mm miniatures. For now he is sitting on my shelf as a memory of the artisans contest XXVI, I had fun drawing my entry. However I have the feeling these men and their backyard rocket will be a part of an army in the future.

You might have seen my rules for some chaos dwarf lords warscrolls I made. I intend to play test all of them. However play testing can’t happen till I have a model for them. I started with Rykarth, to put it simply I just grabbed a random warrior and put him on a large rock plateau. I gave him a dwarf warriors mask and a marauder cape.

Remember my bull centaurs? Nor did I but they are done and have been done for a while. I just added beards. I don’t know why there beards look like that in the photo, I think something went wrong.

I got an old ral partha mortar as an earthshaker. Thommy H made both dreadquake and earthshaker rules so I got it cause it was cheap and a nice model.

I also got the scotia Grendel goliath as a dreadquake, it can also be used as an iron daemon as it has a steam engine as well as front mounted cannons. It is still being painted so no photos yet. You might have seen me asking for advice on making Thorgrim into Ghorth The Cruel. It is going alright, I realized I was out of any sort of sculpting putty, I don’t know how I was unlucky enough to run out of green stuff and milliput at the same time. The worst part is my local hobby shop had none left as well. I ordered it from the cheapest location I could find but it meant it would come over on a slow boat.
So he is sitting and waiting for now. Here a WIP picture of him.

I have some more to show. My painting speed and skill is better now as I finally got rid of my limited, thick, hard to work with Testors enamels and replaced them with army painter paints and got a brand new brush from the mega set. Previously I have been using a P3 work hobby brush I have had since January last year. It has served me marvelously but it has outlasted it’s life span. I now have a regiment brush that I will incorrectly use for just as long knowing myself. I also have some exciting news for my army coming up involving mercenaries. If I ever get them all painted.

Great beardage! Annoyingly your first attempt looks better than the last one I did yesterday. I’ll blame it on old eyes! Thorgrim/ Gorth is coming along brilliantly. I love the hat! I will of course steal the idea shamelessly as I have lots of those bits. You have a great army building up. Well done!

Very nice progress with fuba beards, neat conversions and some interesting miniatures. Good work with the painting as well, and lovely to see the Tjublings already painted. Keep at it! Happy

Gargolock's Experience being a broke kid trying to make an armyGargolock 03-29-2019

This is the first time in awhile that I am not starting this by saying how long it’s been. This time I might as well not say I will get right into it. Maybe I should say a sort of introduction. Or just abandon this paragraph.

Anyways here’s Ghorth The Cruel. I painted him after sculpting some edits, tried to keep the ability to put the book there but ended up deciding not to attach the book as it made the model look too much like Thorgrim. I painted him up in a red and black colour scheme and tried to make the throne look like a blended version of metallic, red and black. It ended up working as now the throne pops on table top and just looks like a bit of all of it. Up close you can start noticing the brush strokes and the purposefully odd highlights but this model is very eyecatching on the field. Which is what I was going for. I did this mostly by using a brighter red and not going over it with ink. I was used to working with very bright colours that required ink (blood red and tangerine was my last big paint project’s colour scheme). I still used ink on most part except the red.

Fun fact: This chaos dwarf army is my first time painting miniatures with such dark colours. Normally I use bright and eccentric colours but with chaos dwarfs I am using a bunch of black which previously was almost never used by me. It is a bit of an experiment but I would say I am getting much better. Ghorth is my first Chaos dwarf model to grab you by the eye when on tabletop.

Ghorth is my General now as even though Rykarth has a better command ability I kinda retired my castellans. I have retired a jabble of models (mostly the terrible ones which you might notice are also no longer even on my blog as well, they are not eye pleasing). I have retired some pretty nice ones I made as I either got a better one or they just weren’t holding up strategically. My castellans just didn’t make the cut.
The main thing I am getting at is that I have noticed my blog is just showing step by step and getting a picture of my army is near impossible due to me just forgetting to show some of it. I am currently on vacation so I don’t have access to my models but as soon as I get back I will take a picture.

Must say didn’t think about how terrible it would be to carry someone over those rocks.
Now that I have considered it I like it even more, it is great because it makes Ghorth’s life look secure. The loyalty of those acolytes is uncontested if they are willing to do that. It also prevents him from ever having guards that are tired, they will probably fall on the floor and need medical care before they get tired.
They are probably in incredible pain, but anything for Hashut!

Heya! I remember your Gorth plans from the advice thread, I somehow completely missed that you are already finished by now. Very well done! It's a great model and looks sufficiently Chaos-Dwarfy. I especially like your work on the throne itself. Keep at it! And you were mentioning something exciting about some mercenaries ... ? Tongue

Gargolock's Experience being a broke kid trying to make an armyGargolock 06-17-2019

“Hello, I did my Golden Hat entry and am now back from vacation. Time to do some pictures.’ That is what I wrote a month ago when I intended to post this. Well at least I have a lot to show this time.” Is what I wrote about a month ago when I intended to post this. Just been sitting in my drafts slowly getting bigger for 2 month. I have taken a bit of a hiatus from painting and you may have noticed I haven’t been as active here. Most of it can be put to the fact that it’s June, I have finals and overall just can’t really focus on anything as schools almost over.

I will start with my golden hat entry from March, I got a shoveling job over winter and planned to buy a large order from Russian alternative by the end of winter. Then the golden hat was announced and instead I decided to pick up some cheap dwarf warriors from my hobby shop, they were in the used miniature section but were still on the sprue. So I just didn’t get a box and they were much cheaper. I had a lot of fun converting them.

Next I will do my BsB, he is one of my first cases of self written background for characters written for my chaos dwarf army. I am more proud of the lore than the paint job. Deifnetly not my best work. His name is Khoth Toothface.

Khoth was born near the Gates of Zharr, he was raised as a Darkwarden, he spent his early life protecting the roads in the darklands. He killed orc warbosses then donated their soldiers to The Tower of Gorgoth. He became a leader in the Darkwardens and eventually left the secluded order to venture to Zharr Naggrund to seek power and an army to lead.
In Zharr Naggrund he enlisted in the immortals and eventually he protected the Sorcerer lord Khardang Spiketail from a Savage Orc Boar Boy and became a Baneguard. As a baneguard he served in Zhatan The Blacks army and had his ambition of being a general scared out of him after he tried to charge a Chaos Lord, Khoth was struck and had his entire right arm crushed. Zhatan was grateful for a challenge. Khoth remembers the blurry site of the brawl, he remembers the wicked, bellowing cackling from Zhatan as he annihilated the chaos lord.
After the battle Zhatan congratulated him for his bravery but threw in a backhanded comment about his weakness. After this battle Khoth gave up his ambitions of being an overlord, instead he only wanted to show himself to Zhatan as a worthy soldier then to eventually be granted power and honour through impressing him. Eventually after intense training he became a Castellan. He served for many years as a castellan in Zhatan’s legion until one day in a battle against ogre raiders, Khoth saw an opportunity. He bellowed a mighty shout and charged a thundertusk. He climbed the mighty tusks until he reached the tyrant atop the beast. Khoth slit his oily, thick throat with his axe than continued to turn the thundertusk around to face the ogre lines. He then slid down the beast whilst cutting its leg to blunt his fall and anger the beast. The thundertusk charged the ogre lines destroying most of them. Zhatan cackled as the battle was won.
When the army returned to give the slaves to Ghorth, Khoth was given the Banner Of Zharr Naggrund by the commander of the Tower of Zharr himself, Zhatan The Black. He now bears the banner of the mighty tower on the battlefield. Constantly upholding the might of Mingol Zharr Naggrund.

Next here is my entire army.

Some new additions you might see I haven’t showed are the 6 ral partha mono-pose trolls, The new iron daemon to replace the old one (it was too small), the death rocket in the back, the scotia Grendel Goliath, the new skullcracker, The Chaos Giant, sneaky gits, The K'daai and the dragon. I don’t have time to show them right now as I should study for my final. But they will eventually get proper close ups. Other than the trolls. All 6 of them were painted in like 5 minutes. My friend was deploying on the table when they were painted. A few of my models are pretty poorly painted but I am still learning how to paint chaos dwarfs. Don’t mean to sound ignorant but most of my models look way better in person than on camera. However some are terrible both ways. I should see if I can find a better light source or even see if I can borrow my brothers camera.

My chaos giant is a DnD unpainted Hill Giant. I would have to say that with my experience with DnD unpainted miniatures I am starting to really enjoy them, not only are they cheap and pre-primed but they are nicely sculpted and made out of a nice hard plastic.

My K’daai is a reaper "Minotaur Demon Lord". This unlike the giant didn't make me appreciate the company, it just reminded me of how difficult Reaper Bones can be. It also reminded me of how quality some of the reaper sculpts are.

They are releasing a new material called "Bones Black" which is supposedly way better. I haven't tried it but it sounds good. They have an Orc shaman that looks more like a hobgoblin to me, might get him and attach a spearhead to his staff

That was my jabble (if I use it enough I believe it will catch on with the majority of people) of models. As for Mercenaries, They are still being worked on. I paint them when I have nothing else to paint and currently they keep getting pushed back behind other things. But even with how exciting my surprise mercenaries are, I have a project so grand that even my chaos dwarfs got shoved back in the painting queue cause of it. More on that project when I paint the models, probably on Wednesday as I don’t have much time to paint till then.

Great post and good jabbling. Love the bsb  back story. Great army building up there. As others have said you are really improving. Hey you are less than a third of my age and already painting better. Remember you learn from your mistakes not your successes. Keep it up!

Gargolock's Experience being a broke Teenager trying to make an armyGargolock 08-09-2019

That mistake gets me everytime.

just past one year on from my first post.
I remember that night, I stayed up the entire night digging through bins for toys, then hot gluing, brainstorming, etc etc. Then near the end I took some terrible photos of my work and typed out a forum post.
I have come very far since then, in a multitude of ways
I am a better writer first of all (“August 4rd” comes to mind)
Secondly, a way better painter. Practice makes perfect and I am still not perfect, still got more to do. But I am way better after all the practice I got. So far  I am really proud of my Hochland Stuff and I feel like I am getting better with every model. Still got more practice to do however.

One thing that still suffers a bit is my photography, nothing a little goal setting and investment can’t fix.

So far in 1 year of being active on CDO I have enjoyed it. This community is bright and always fun. Really aids the hobby to have a place to share your work, view others work and discuss news and the hobby in general.
I have started my second army, the first few test models turned out better than most of my Chaos Dwarfs have. Makes me want to re-paint some of my Chaos Dwarfs now that I have had more practice.

Its good that every new model I paint I think it is the best I have ever painted, shows growth.

Well to celebrate my 1 year anniversary with the Chaos Dwarfs, I will post a picture....   of those mercenaries I mentioned!

Presenting to You! Some Chaos Warriors!

I was super proud of these guys, it was my first time edge highlighting and my first time where I actually succeeded while layering. I liked these guys a lot. I found them on the floor in the back of my local hobby shop, they were one of those old boxes of models which were meant to test paint schemes on. 3 for 10 bucks, I got them because I always loved the Chaos Warrior models but never enough to buy a unit of them. So I saw my chance to buy a few and took it. I decided to test out 3 of the 4 mark paint schemes to see which one I enjoyed most. I liked Nurgle and Slaanesh most.

I actually planned to get more mercenaries on the field after painting these guys, I had a bunch of Reaper models that I was gonna paint and even had a Warmachine and Hordes model I have had for a while that I was gonna use as a Daemon Prince. The backstory was that Archaon sent some Chaos Lords and a Daemon Prince to inspect the Chaos Dwarfs to see if they were Chaos Undivided material. Never got around to painting them though. Might do it someday.

I am excited for what’s next for me and my armies, I will do the empire army for a while then come back and probably redo and repaint some of my Chaos Dwarfs, make them better and spice them up a bit. Then I will probably expand my Chaos Dwarfs, I still don’t have any Bale Tauruses, Bull Centaurs, Acoytes, Altars, Etc etc, missing a Jabble (not gonna even comment, its a regular word) of cool things that are required.

Well, Thanks for reading. I will be mostly working on Hochland for the coming while. Also on a side note I have been using Tinypic up until now as when I googled "How to upload photos to the internet" it was the first result, but that's shutting down so the photos here might not work anymore other than the new ones I am using Imgur for.
