Kered's Dwarfs of Shadow and Steel blogKered 05-30-2010

From the frozen chaos wastes march dwarfs clad dark armour wilding weapons forged on the blazing souls of daemons.

This blog will show the slow progress of my CD army.

Fist up my shadow sorcerer:

For this army I'm wanting to have a dark sinister looking army and have have some thing other than lava bases. He was converted from a skaven grayseer  and green stuff.

I thought that he wouldn't be walking around a lot with feet of stone and logically he will have some snow buildup.Tongue

C&C are much appreciated.

Totally stellar concept. Love the colour scheme you've gone with, very dark and does give it a cold ash look.

Great conversion as well. Do you have any photos of this as WIP?

Sadly I don't have any photos of the WIP I painted him unexpectedly for a painting competition at my local store(I won third place) but it is a fairly simple conversion the base is this model is found here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalo...rod1040030
You basically do what you would do to a normal dwarf to covert it with a few extras like covering/removing the tail.

The main reason that my forces are slow to build up (other than my laziness) is that I am making most of my dwarfs from scratch, right now I am in the process of casting my fist dwarf here:
http://www.chaos-dwarfs.com/forum/showth...464&page=1
I have got the sprue set up now all I need is too to find appropriate silicone, resin, releasing agent ect.(I really should of planed ahead but why change the habit of a life time.)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4659...b044_b.jpg

C&C are much appreciated.

I might do that if people are interested when(if) I successfully cast it, I also plan after making a few to re sculpt hand to cary blunderbusses. We'll just have to wait and see(and hope I doesn't collapse in on it self).

RE: Kered's Dwarfs of Shadow and Steel blogKered 06-04-2010

Today I got my supplies for the mold making so I been working on that this afternoon if I am lucky I might have some cast at the end of the weekend.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4057/4669...801a_b.jpg
this is it just before I added the silicone.

This was my first try and they never go as well as they could, unfortunately wasn't at the right consistency but nothing too bad should be fine tomorrow after Its had time the solidify fully.

Nice to see some casting going on Happy

Is that the recommended way to do sprues for resin? I've never used it before.

RE: Kered's Dwarfs of Shadow and Steel blogKered 06-05-2010

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I'm using Xanders tutorial  for 2 part molds which was very useful and I highly recommend for any one wanting to do miniature casting in resin. The main thing to look out for is that there are no places for air to get caught as the resin pushes it out such as the axe handle and the like.

@Da Crasha: Yes, yes I am.
(if it works)

Only a  small update.
Both sides of the mold are now complete.

My first cast and as with all first casts it never comes out perfectly.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4002/4673...dbfa_b.jpg

I'm not going to bore you with a ft long list of thing that went wrong I'l let you work them out for your selves. The important thing is that I know what not to do now and despite all the flaws He came out rather well I mean he looks 'slightly' like a dwarf.

(Oh no the curse of the blurry photos has struck againRespect to the Mask!)

C&C are much appreciated.

Great job on the Sorcerer! I especially like that you used a miniature from a totally different race as a base for the mini.

The pic of the finished casting is a bit blurry. Looks like his right foot may not have come out completely? It would be informative for those (like me) who plan on casting in resin to know what problems you encountered and how you plan to fix them in subsequent casts. Otherwise, the original sculpt looks awesome and I hope you get it to turn out the way you envision it soon.

Keep up the good work!
