§16: Introduction
As of 04-14-2014: This is now a CDO project.

"It is a guttural language, and Khazalid vowel sounds in particular are uncompromisingly precise and very heavily accented. Consonants are often spat aggressively or gargled at the back of the throat."

"Greetings fellow Dawi-Zharr"

I know I've had some fun and flavor greeting fellow users here like this.

Approaching the subject, we should be aware of the Lore on various dialects of Khazalid and that things can be described in many different ways. However I hope we could contribute an article presenting some examples of how we say things here around the trendier district of Mingol Zharr-Naggrund. Direct translation are impossible because of the differences in the amount of words between the ancient dwarf tongue and the low speech of the race of the Umgi that they themselves call "In-Glesh". This task is a great one however it truly is amazing to see a word or a phrase develop and something I think is much better suited as a community project than a scholarly one.

Submissions can be good or bad however nothing is really wrong if it's descriptive and everyone is welcome to participate with submissions, new or additional entries, grammatical corrections for words or interesting phrases, curses or battlecries etc. Happy

.............................

§17: The origin of the Chaos Dwarf language and comments by Rick Priestley
"The original source for the Dwarf language was the Dwarf Army book for WH 4th edition as I'm sure you know - which Nigel Stillman and I wrote way back when - the Dwarfish language and grammar was based on an article I wrote in the 1980's for Warhammer Roleplay that never saw the light of day. The Chaos Dwarf language is a dialect of your standard Dwarf Khazalid - so in terms of grammar and word construction it is the same. The trouble is - many subsequent writers at GW have either ignored or weren't aware of the work done previously - as so often happens. The words I introduced for Tamurkhan were all based on the original Khazalid - I guess when the book was rewritten, FW used some of those words.  But if they introduced any further words or phrases  the chances are they just made them up without reference to the source language or internal rules - K'daai for example makes no sense to me in terms of its word form (as a Dwarf word). Good luck with the project - may your beards grow ever longer!"

.............................

§18: General guidelines:
We work with versions to keep track of what has been done where.
v1.0 equals a translated dictionary entry.
v1.5 is a simplified and contracted entry with corrected Khazalid and dwarfified DToC.
v2.0 means the entry has revised grammar and has been double-checked by Hashut's Blessing.

Like the famous example of "Chaos Dwarfs" translating into "Dawi-Zharr" that literally makes "Dwarfs of Fire", we will have to resort to wit, cunning and clever wordplay for most translations.

The lore of various Khazalid dialects mean that there is no problem with multiple variations of the same word or phrase. Dialects and languages change with time and trend.

Hashut's Blessing Wrote:
My initial comment is: don't try to get exact translations or entire translations a it makes things cumbersome.

E.g. Daemonsmith Sorcerer - Grungn-A-Dhaos'y Khaosul (Literally: Smith-Of-Daemonmetal Sorcerer) ; Khazalid + Dark Tongue of Chaos

When we could have, for example, Grungn-a-dhaos'y (literal: Smith of Daemonmetal, translation: Daemonmetalsmith, equivalent: Daemonsmith Sorcerer/Daemonsmith).

Just as an example of removing redundancies: we may find a contracted name for it still.

"Possible linguistic influences on the language (or those languages the Chaos Dwarfs may have influenced themselves) are the Dark Tongue (Chaos tribesmen and Warriors of Chaos), Goblin Tongue (Greenskins), particularly Harghazhakh, the Hobgoblin dialect; Grumbarth (Ogre Kingdoms), and Daemonic (the arcane language of demons and Chaos sorcerers)"
Khazalid is only the base language of the Chaos Dwarf tongue, I suggest however primarily use of loan-words from languages that are relevant to what they are describing, like for instance:

-Daemonic units or Daemon related terms, like: K'daai, Sorcerers, Daemonsmiths, Lore of Hashut, Magic Items, Possessed Warmachines, etc = Khazalid grammar and base + Daemon Tongue

-Hobgoblin units or hobgoblin related terms, like Hobgoblin Khan, Murder boss etc. = Khazalid grammar and base + Harghazhakh / Hobgoblin dialect

-Ogre units or ogre related terms, like slave-ogre etc. = Khazalid grammar and base + Grumbarth (The Tongue of the Ogre Kingdoms)

Hashut's Blessing Wrote:
Regarding the use of apostrophes and hyphens, it may be a case by case basis, but hyphens are preferable to apostrophes because of the Khazalid roots. A lot of the formation of the language may be down to what "feels" right, but we can certainly base a rough system on it.

Submissions can be left in replies here in this thread and I will update the lists accordingly Happy Try to keep to the format of the example below for easier overview and editing, also please include both stem and grammar for the sake of discussion.

Example:

Chaos Siege Giant
Baragak Gront-Zharr (Literally: Siege machine-ing Giant of Fire: Giant of Fire that does sieges)

Stem:
Barag - Cannon, siege-machine, war machine (Khazalid)
Gronti - Giants (as in creatures) (Khazalid)
Zharr - Fire (Khazalid)

Khazalid Grammar:
Generalizing: + i, makes Singular of Gronti: Gront
The concept of: + ak, makes the concept of a siege-machine: Baragak

.............................

§19: Resources:

Chaos Dwarf Colloquial words
While the Chaos Dwarf language is a corrupt form of Khazalid, there are mentions of specific Chaos Dwarf words that does not stem from Khazalid. These official colloquial words obviously over-rule any other variations.

Khazalid (Ancient dwarfish language)
The article containing the Khazalid wordlist and grammar as found on the CDO wiki. Original source is the 4th edition Dwarf Army book

Dark Tongue of Chaos / Daemon Tongue
We use a dwarfified version of the Dark Tongue of Chaos to dampen the more oily and slithering words. Original source is the 6th edition Hordes of Chaos armybook, located among the last pages.

Harghazhakh and Grumbarth
The obscure languages of the Hobgoblins and the Ogres.

§20: Sources:

RE: WoH submission: Khazalid of the TamurkhanAdmiral 02-28-2014

Interesting concept. I'll watch this space.

It's not much input, but I've always imagined the Chaos Dwarf language as one of Khazalid which have become quite bastardized by adopting some Chaos tounge influences, with a slap of Babylonian on top of that.

Dwarfs being Dwarfs, even when devoted to Chaos, I guess core words in the language (like words for parents, stones, fire, metals, smithing and hunting) have remained virtually unchanged throughout the millenia, whilst some looser words (like equivalents of "for", "the", "such as") have mutated, as would many specialist terms.

Especially those terms associated with Daemonsmithing and other Dawi Zharr specialties would be prone to be exotic when compared to Khazalid, and many of the professional words wouldn't even make sense at all to outsiders, no matter their race or language, without a thorough explanation.

Thanks for your interest!

I agree, hmm I think this bastardization might be reflected somewhat atleast through the untranslateable words that we are already given, like K'daii, Taur'uk, Ba'hal and personal names Happy

This one just ready, it took it's time since neither dread, quake or mortar are words that exists in dwarfish...

EDIT: Your absolutely right in everything... Takes Hat off I read up on the subject abit more and Khazalid is indeed only the base for the language of the Dawi-Zharr. I updated everything with source-language displayed. Still I believe the translations should be relevant, like green-skin phrases blended in for hobgoblins and "Dark Tongue of Chaos" / daemon-phrases blended in with K'daii, Lore of Hashut, Daemonsmiths and Sorcerers etc. also for the sake of keeping atleast some of my sanity in all of this I kept, and will continue to keep, the grammatics Khazalid in my own submissions atleast... A dwarfy taste in the Chaos, so to speak!

...

v1.5 Dreadquake Mortar
Dum-Dronit Baragaz (Literally: The Cannon that makes the Loud Boom of Doom -OR- The Doom-Thundering Cannon)

Stem:
Dum - Doom or darkness; Chaos (Khazalid)
Dron - Thunder, loud boom/noise (Khazalid)
Barag - Cannon, siege machine, war machine (Khazalid)

Khazalid Grammar:
Specified (the): +az makes Baragaz
the act of: + it makes Dronit

RE: WoH submission: Khazalid of the TamurkhanMadHatter 02-28-2014

v1.5 Hobgoblin Wolf Raider
Hargh Varag Vongi (Literally: A Hobgoblin Wolf Raider)

Stem:
Harghaz - Hobgoblin* (Harghazhakh / Hobgoblin Tongue)
Varag - Mad dog, wolf (Khazalid)
Vongal - Raiding band (Khazalid)

Khazalid Grammar:
Generalizing: + al makes singular of vongal: Vong
General singular: +i makes: Vongi
Specifying: + az makes harghaz: Hargh, because subject is moved from "hobgoblin" to "wolf raider", as hobgoblin becomes descriptive.

*A problematic issue is that there is no Khazalid word in the dictionairy list for hobgoblin, however the name of the hobgoblin dialect according to the wiki is "Harghazhakh". I speculate that the first part "Harghaz" means "the hobgoblin" and the ending "Hakh" means "Tongue". This would make sense grammatically by the Khazalid ending +az appearing in the middle of the word, as if even these are two different languages they are said to have influated each other.

Update:
Daemon Tongue with Khazalid grammar, how's that for corrupted language Wink
...
Wanted to move away from the dwarfish on these a bit since they are of a daemonic nature. Found this thread with examples of words from the Dark Tongue of Chaos, where I found some words of relevance

"Another example listed in Realms of Chaos is some variations of the word Aqshy, which basically translates as red/fire (one of the Winds of Magic from Fantasy), with variations being Aqshy'y (brass), Aqsh (the colour red), Akhash (blood), Akh (battle/bloodshed/to slay), Aksha (battleaxe), Ksy (key, incidentally the symbol of the Wind of Aqshy), Iakash (lock/obstacle), Aksho (To seek), Akshami (Secret), Akhamshy'y (Slayers/warriors), Akami (Guardians)."

Source: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic...rk-tongue/

The Hordes of Chaos from 6th ed. Warhammer is a source for the Daemon Tongue. Is complicated but can fill some gaps...

Update 2
Hordes of Chaos 6th ed. is the way to go to speak the Daemon Tongue!

Haven't read the entire thread, but have read the entire first post. I'll go over this with a fine-tooth comb when I'm offline and have my Khazalid dictionary to hand.

All that said, loving the idea, very glad it's opened up to the community to help decide. Parting comment: it's more likely suitable to be added to the Wiki when "completed", rather than Word of Hashut - purely because Word of Hashut won't have an issue for some time, yet...

Welcome on-board the battlebarge, it sure needs some direction! I also believe simplifying is the way to go and it will be more correct and also much more practical to use Happy

Basicly the only 3 rules I've used apart from grammar is that the CD specific words overrule all, then I based on Khazalid and Khazalid grammar and simply used Dark Tongue, Hobgoblin dialect and Ogre tongue where they correspond with what they describe (like only hobgoblin loan-words on hobgoblin units, etc.). Lastly I tried to use the same terms to translate the same words. Let me know if you agree with this system, otherwise we can adjust and adapt it!

Following that the produced abominations where simply bendt to Khazalid grammar, treating them as "loan-words", this also granted the ability to transmute new words where none really existed before.

I'm a novice in all the languages though so it's awesome you'll be correcting this! Later on perhaps we should also find a name for the CDO dialect? Anyhow, really glad a senior member jumped aboard and I am really looking forward to see your work with this! Takes Hat off
